Almost five centuries separate us from the controversial character that Hernán Cortés was. The character and his actions have awaken diverse and mixed feelings. In the 16th century his personality already drew the attention of his contemporaries. Lucio Marineo Sículo and Francisco López de Gómara wrote about him, among others, and his actions did not go unnoticed to other historians of his time, such as Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo and fray Bartolomé de las Casas. Literature, drama, poetry and music also immortalised Cortés throughout these years. Even Miguel de Cervantes mentioned the “cortesísimo Cortés” in Don Quixote and recalled the “great Hernando Cortés” in El licenciado Vidriera.
Miradas sobre Hernán Cortés includes a series of critical studies that situate the main character in circumstances of his time; they highlight his skills as a soldier, strategist, politician and negotiator and they point out his mistakes and mishaps. They, furthermore, present different interpretations of the character in the past five centuries.
