PRESENTATION OF THE BOOK EL INCA GARCILASO DE LA VEGA, PRIMER INTELECTUAL MESTIZO

On Wednesday, 17 October at 20:00 pm, at the headquarters of the Unión de Bibliófilos Extremeños (Union of Extremaduran Bibliophiles) in Badajoz

In this monograph, number 2 of the book collection “Entre dos mundos: América y Europa desde Extremadura”, the works of excellent researchers and renowned specialists on the work of the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega are included on the occasion of the celebration of the scientific encounter, organised by the Extremaduran Centre for Studies and Cooperation with Ibero-America (CEXECI), under the title EL INCA GARCILASO DE LA VEGA, PRIMER INTELECTUAL MESTIZO (INCA GARCILASO DE LA VEGA, FIRST MESTIZO INTELLECTUAL), that took place from the 9th to the 10th of November 2016 in Badajoz, and was supported by the Royal Academy of Arts and Humanities of Extremadura, the Union of Extremaduran Bibliophiles and the Royal Economic Society of Friends of the Country, where the sessions were held. The 5th anniversary since the death of Gómez Suárez de Figueroa –better known as Inca Garcilaso de la Vega- in Córdoba, on April 1616, was thus commemorated. This figure, who was born in Cuzco, was the son of the Extremaduran captain from Badajoz, Sebastián Garcilaso de la Vega and the Inca princess Isabel Chimpu. He is considered “America’s first biological and spiritual mestizo”; a man between two worlds who knew how to assume and consolidate his two cultural heritages: the American indigenous culture and the European one.
