The Yuste Foundation presents a book that analyses reality and the challenges of the Caribbean in Madrid

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation presented the posthumous work of the economist and political scientist Viktor Sukup: El Caribe frente a los desafíos del futuro, in Madrid. This is a “panoramic reflection” where he examines history and the reality of the Caribbean region as well as the multiplicity of its people and cultures.

The following assistants participated during the volume’s presentation, which took place at the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB): the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation’s Academic Director, César Chaparro; the Ambassador of Costa Rica in Spain, Doris Osterlof; the former President of the European Parliament, Enrique Barón Crespo; the Director of External Relations of the SEGIB, María Salvadora Ortiz, and the widow of the author, Marta Cazon. The presentation was also attended by the Minister Counselor and Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Haiti, Olga Medor Ducasse and by the director of the European and Ibero-Ameican Academy of Yuste Foundation, Juan Carlos Moreno.

During his speech, Chaparro highlighted that this book “is an excellent study of a very complex reality, as is the case of the Caribbean; a region where Spanish is more widely spoken than English or French”, the result of a mosaic of people who are a reflection of a complex miscegenation.

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation’s Academic Director pointed out that Sukup’s scientific and rigorous work “is not a simple historical analysis or the ascertainment of each one of these countries’ temporal or spatial coordinates, but seeks answers to those questions he asks about the future of this warm region instead.” He does this “basing his hypotheses on the examination of the socioeconomic data and the risky response often given to fundamental challenges, as the environmental challenge and external cooperation may be”, asserted Chaparro.

This presentation also became a tribute to the author, who died unexpectedly in 2016 when the edition of this book was being prepared.

El Caribe frente a los desafíos del futuro is volumen 8 of the Collection “Pensamiento Iberoamericano”. This collection is included in the editorial initiative of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, whose aim is to publish essays and studies which focus on analysing the Ibero-American reality in all areas with the contribution and authorship of renowned Ibero-American personalities.
