The course, to be organised in collaboration with the “A Soul for Europe” Initiative aims to show good practices in which culture is the facilitating axis of European integration, citizen participation and democratic development in Europe. It aims to present the opportunities offered by culture as a space to overcome the current challenges of the European Union, such as the refugee crisis and terrorism, developing values ​​such as solidarity, respect and tolerance, that clash with speeches on exclusion, hatred and racism. The course was created to strengthen the lines of action of the European initiative “A Soul for Europe” that promotes the coordination of innovative initiatives, projects and policies that arise in the European periphery, at a local and regional level and from the citizens themselves to build alternatives and solutions to improve integration in the current and future European context.

The year 1516 was especially important because several events took place marking the beginning of an era and a new course in the history of Spain, Europe and the World. That year, on 23 January, Ferdinand the Catholic, King of Aragon and Castile died in Madrigalejo, a town in the province of Extremadura, having signed the day before his last will and testament. That same year his grandson Charles I would take control of the kingdoms of Spain. This course shall participate in the commemoration events of the Fifth Centenary of the death of Ferdinand the Catholic, addressing a historical epoch in which two worlds come together from three perspectives, first that of Ferdinand the Catholic with that of Charles I, who a few years later, in 1520, would be crowned as Charles V Holy Roman Emperor. This fact is what marks the beginning of the union of two other worlds, such as that of Spain with Europe, and in turn the encounter between the European and Ibero-American worlds, because under the title of Charles I and Charles V, the territories of the Old and New Continent are united historically on both sides of the Atlantic, as the rights to the Indies were also inherited, creating an empire where, as the chronicles say, the sun never sets.

The 1st of January of 2016 was the date of the 30th anniversary of Spain and Portugal’s accession to the European Economic Community, now the European Union, following the signing of the Treaty of Accession of the two countries which took place on 12 June 1985. The challenges are constant and Europe is the solution to all of them. As the great philosopher and thinker José Ortega y Gasset said when, more than a hundred years ago, he already analysed the Spain’s problem: “Spain is the problem and Europe the solution”. He supported the Europeanisation of Spain, the opening of Spain to its culture, science, thought and philosophy in order to fight the ossified ideas that prevented us from moving forward, from evolving and growing. These pro-European trends, which were also supported by other great figures such as Menéndez Pidal, Dr. Maranón, Américo Castro and Sánchez Albornoz, would take time to become a reality in our country, but it finally succeeded in the 80s after leaving behind almost 40 years of dictatorship in Spain (and almost 50 in Portugal). This course aims to better understand the process lived for the past 30 years in Spain and Portugal, to reflect and analyse the factors of success and failure, enabling us to move forward in the process of European integration.

Today’s international relations has safety as one of its main cornerstones for understanding the changes that are occurring. The analysis of the data and the current concern about the characteristics acquired by the phenomenon of terrorism and its extension, are the backbone of studies on safety in Europe today. In this context, there is an inescapable humanitarian dimension which is especially visible on refugees and other groups that have been forced to move. The actions undertaken and the difficulties of implementation will be studied together with a comparative analysis of experiences, including those deployed in the Latin American context, which must necessarily be made in the light of International Law of Human Rights. In this line, it is especially important to pay particular attention to the need to introduce a gender perspective in relation to the conflict, not only due to the active presence of women in peacekeeping operations or their position in peace, repatriation or resettlement processes, but also due to their active participation in the different decision-making levels.

Under the title “Religion, secular society and violence,” the Yuste Dialogues, organised by the faculties of Theology, Canon Law and Philosophy at the Universidad Pontificia de Salamanca, are intended to reflect on the links between the three concepts in the title, wondering to what extent violence is present in secular society and in religion and, if eradicating violence from secular society outside the contribution of religion is possible and how so.

“Culture and the media in democratic Spain and their projection towards Europe”

Based on a historical concern but also on the growing perception that the period of the Transition to democracy has become an essential yardstick for our current political and social system, this annual encounter in Yuste, which reaches its seventh year, establishes itself with the aim of reflecting on the above historical period, contemplating the perspective of time and making it possible to take stock of the changing perception of the transition until today. In the same way, we examine the European perspective, analysing how the European Community, the current-day European Union, has influenced the success of the Spanish Transition to democracy and the projection that the latter has had on the process of European integration.

This year’s encounter, which is organized jointly with the University of Extremadura and the King Juan Carlos University, addresses the subject of “Culture and the media in democratic Spain and their projection towards Europe”, which is one of the most interesting areas of the transformation process of Spanish society, especially from the nineteen eighties onwards. The encounter covers the period from the stagnant proposals of the latter years of the Franco regime to the emergence of the anti-Franco culture and the opening up of the country to the European cultural spheres of the time. Meanwhile, the world of the media undergoes a revolution culminating in a new environment for the printed press and publishing, but also for the audiovisual world until the arrival of the private television channels.
