In continental Europe modern states aspire to manage the greatest possible number of spaces in public life. To achieve this they take on the capacity to establish a collections system allowing them to be adequately funded. In return they are making a commitment to citizens to provide the services they demand.

In this context, we pose the question of whether the Catholic Church and other similar institutions should form part of the services that citizens can ask the state to fund, and what the procedure should be for doing so. Going beyond this, we question what place religion has in public life.

Two special celebrations will be held in 2017, commemorating highlights of the process of European construction and integration. Firstly, the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome, which were signed on 25 March 1957 in the city they were named after. They subsequently gave rise to the European Communities; the seed of the legal framework of the united Europe we know today. Thirty-five years later on 7 February 1992 the Maastricht Treaty was signed, which in 2017 celebrates 25 years of existence. This gave a new name to the European project which came to be known as the European Union. The Treaty laid the foundations for a Europe of the people, with the capacity to play an active role in the integration process, conceived as the political culmination of a set of binding regulations for all member states of the European Union: as much for future members as for the states signing at the time of the Treaty.

Europe today faces a number of simmering challenges, which put at risk – and at times even put into question – the process of European construction: the principal objectives of which have been since its origins to consolidate peace, create stability and progress; and promote and defend values such as freedom, equality, solidarity, democracy, and all values linked to the protection of human rights. In the face of a divided and in part eurosceptic European Union with a great deal of uncertainty about the future, at the European Academy of Yuste Foundation there is little doubt that Europe continues to be part of the solution, as Ortega y Gasset would say. Through this summer course we wish to look back to the past and commemorate these two special events so that history can help us to better understand the importance of the European project and draw important lessons from the past to confront current challenges and lay stronger foundations for the future of the European Union.

This meeting, in the form of a course, is the first EUROPE FACING GLOBAL CHALLENGES FROM COOPERATION TO DEVELOPMENT project activity, which aims to examine in-depth, from Extremadura, the role of the European Union as a region facing major internal challenges within a global context of crisis and transformation. At the same time it is committed to Sustainable Development as a global challenge in which cooperation between public, private, and civil society agents, as well as between regions and countries, is key to achieving shared objectives.

The course will cover the importance of prevention and the role cooperation plays in health to overcome the challenge of eradicating endemic diseases such as malaria. In many cases it is the result of sanitation problems, but malaria continues to cause a large number of deaths per year in developing countries, and could be avoided by applying effective treatments and measures within social services. The subject is of particular interest as malaria caused the death of Charles V, and was endemic to the district of Vera until the middle of the 20th century. The district has a nationally renowned institute of epidemiology.

Through talks and round-table discussions with eminent experts from various scientific, academic, and cooperative institutions, the origin of the disease will be explored, as well as the ways to combat it which have been developed at an international level, and proposals for the future to ensure its total eradication.

Palacio de la Generala (Cáceres). 10 – 12 July 2017

This course aims to study and analyse the socio-economic, political, and cultural effects of the thirty years of Spain and Portugal’s integration into the European Union from 1986 to 2016. With this purpose in mind, guided by a series of Spanish and Portuguese experts we will analyse the major changes and adjustments both countries have experienced at every level, as well as changes to their international role and function.

We will cover three thematic areas in particular:

1) Major transformations of Spanish and Portuguese society resulting from joining the European Union.
2) The changing position of Iberian countries on the international stage resulting from joining the European Union.
3) The main aspects of socio-economic and cultural change resulting from Spain and Portugal joining the European Union.

The course will also include two round table discussions covering the impact of European integration on Spain and Portugal from key players from economic (unions and businesses) and cultural (the media) circles.

An annual course looking at the figure and times of Emperor Charles V. 2017 sees the commemoration of important events, such as the fifth centenary of Charles V’s first voyage to Spain to be crowned Charles I and the start of the Reformation, the Christian religious movement started in Germany in the XVI century by Martin Luther.
This event brought a rift to the Catholic Church which gave rise to a number of churches and organisations grouped under the denomination of Protestantism, which would mark the kingdom of Charles V. In view of this the course will analyse what the Reformation led to in the life and times of the Emperor, in Imperial Europe which extended as far as the New World, as well as its impact on the Europe we know today.

The course will take a look at politics and religion in Charles V’s Europe and his attitude towards Protestantism. The era of reforms in the period will be examined, along with the relationship between the university and church reform. The paradigms and attitudes of Erasmus towards Luther will also be an object of debate and reflection in a round table discussion. We will also look at the cultural climate of the Spain of Charles V before his arrival to the country, the development of Protestantism and Lutheranism in Spain, and the exile of Spanish Lutherans and their contribution to the Reformation in Spain. Finally we will examine different aspects of the impact Lutheranism had in Europe, Spain, and the New World, and how it is reflected in Spanish literature of past centuries. A discussion panel will also analyse films made on the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, drawing from literature and art.

This course will provide a continuation of the lines of analysis and study of the Campus Yuste and CEXECI Programme on the perspectives and challenges of the European Union, the process of integration with Latin America, Latin America’s economic situation, and the future of the Ibero-American Community.

At the start of the 1990s with the fall of the Berlin wall, the world ushered in a new era with the triumph of economic liberalism and the start of so-called open regionalism, launching NAFTA and MERCOSUR, an Americas initiative, and a relaunch of EU-ASEAN.

At the end of last year the influential magazine The Economist questioned whether, with the triumph of Trump in the United States, added to Brexit, we may find ourselves facing the end of the era of globalisation.

What is certain is that having just reached 60 years since its launch, the process of European integration is navigating one of the lowest points in its history.

The United States in the Trump era struggles between breakdowns and continuity, yet still without an impact of the shocks on Latin America.

In the face of the differences opening up between the United States and Europe, Latin America has become, in the words of Chief European Diplomat Federica Mogherini, “a strategic relationship for the EU, even more essential now than it was before. The Ibero-American Community is – on both sides of the Atlantic – a space which is gaining more relevance, because common values are becoming an asset to strengthen in a world so difficult to decode”.

This course continues the theme of the Campus Yuste programme to tackle, from a multi-disciplinary perspective, an in-depth analysis of the main challenges facing the European Union in a global context of major transformations. This is being approached from a both academic and practical viewpoint, to help us comprehensively understand these challenges with the aim of analysing how we can confront them, and define strategies for the future to be able to confront them from the perspective of the European Union.

Europe’s role in the world, the Brexit challenge, threatened European values, the rise of euroscepticism, the resurgence of populism and xenophobic movements, the terrorism threat, migration and identity crises and questionable European migratory policy, the constant threats to human and social rights, both within and outside our borders, and the new world order resulting from the latest elections in the United States, all put Europe under the spotlight and question whether it can manage – and respond to – all these challenges.

The European dream is under threat, and whilst some question its future others opt for a stronger Europe, united and well-structured, capable of confronting these challenges and defining strategies which allow us to move forward: albeit at different speeds, in contrast to the cruising speed we have become used to. We therefore need to analyse the main threats facing Europe, with the aim of gaining a deeper understanding of the causes that provoke them. That way we can carry out an effective diagnosis resulting in a process of renewal: one that will nonetheless remain anchored by the pillars which have kept Europe united for 60 years since the Rome Treaties were signed.

On the occasion of the Carlos V European Award the Foundation has called for European Research and Mobility Grants in European Studies Carlos V European Award – Sofia Corradi – Mamma Erasmus which will examine the theme “European peace and values as a potential model of integration and progress in a global world”. This second meeting, in the format of a seminar, will focus on circulating the research selected in the call with the idea of promoting the transfer of knowledge from academic circles to civil society and public and private organisations.

The content will focus specifically on the themes contributed by researchers selected through the call, examining the importance of European policies, agreements and initiatives in the peace process, the stability and progress the European Union represents, as well as the consolidation and defence of European values as the fundamental and indisputable basis of the integration process, with the aim of preventing the errors of the past and improving strategies for the future.

The seminar will also contribute, using the European model as an example, to the EUROPE FACING GLOBAL CHALLENGES FROM COOPERATION TO DEVELOPMENT project, through the research works presented, tackling Sustainable Development Goal 16: Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all, and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels.

Highlighting the importance of being able to rely on strong institutions in achieving these goals, and taking the European model as an example, the seminar aims to introduce perspectives that would be used as a reference and help guide the development of new initiatives and policies.

This workshop will tackle the need to mainstream a gender-based approach at all levels of society to fight against violence and discrimination towards women, as well as promoting equal rights and opportunities.

Together with third-sector organisations and participating public bodies from Extremadura, the workshop will analyse examples of good practice developed both at a European level and in the field of cooperation. The main aim is to shed light on the issue and possible solutions, with in-depth analysis of the causes, as well as raising awareness on social co-responsibility to put an end to this type of inequality which affects all countries.

The workshop aims to contribute towards tackling the various challenges on the agenda of Sustainable Development Goal 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls; and Goal 10: Reduce inequality within and among countries, achieving true educational, labour, financial and social equality for women, as well as eliminating all forms of violence against all women and girls in public and private spheres.
