Award 2024

In this 17th edition, the jury decided to award the Carlos V European Award to His Excellency Mr. Mario Draghi, president of the European Central Bank (2011-2019) and prime minister of the Republic of Italy (2021-2022), for his leadership at the helm of the European Central Bank, which allowed the European Union to face one of the greatest crises it has experienced since its inception. He implemented a series of decisive and risky measures that, amidst the recession in the European economy, maintained the strength of the euro and the autonomy of the ECB, while also saving the single currency, enabling Europe to emerge strengthened from this crisis. It is also worth highlighting his exemplary promotion of European ethical principles as central axes of economic governance, emphasising his extraordinary capacity, foresight, and dialogue in the service of a united Europe, as well as his attention to and support for youth as guarantors of Europe’s future, tasks that go beyond the strictly economic sphere. All these merits —and more that he possesses— make him, in the jury’s opinion, worthy of the Carlos V European Award in its 17th edition.

An Italian economist, he chaired the European Central Bank from 1 November 2011 to October 2019. During the European Central Bank’s struggle against the effects of the 2008 economic crisis, the Draghi plan for monetary expansion was launched. His words were significant on 26 July 2012, in full sovereign debt crisis, when he announced that “the ECB is ready to do whatever is necessary to reserve the euro. And believe me, it will be enough”, and they marked a turning point in the eurozone crisis by calming markets. The policies that followed led to a steady decline in costs of the loans for indebted eurozone members, including Italy.

He has been President of the Italian Government from February 2021 until his resignation in July 2022. He was governor of the Bank of Italy from 2006 to 2011. From 1991 to 2001 he was director general of the Italian Treasury and president of the privatisation committee. From 2002 to 2006 he was vice president for Europe at Goldman Sachs. From 1985 to 1990 he was executive director of the World Bank.

Award 2023

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation celebrated the award ceremony of the Carlos V European Award on 9 May 2023 at the Monastery of San Jerónimo of Yuste. It has been granted to Antonio Guterres, in this edition and the ceremony was presided over by His Majesty King Felipe VI.

In this 16th edition, the jury has decided to award the Carlos V European Award to H.E. Mr. António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, for his proven, extensive and long-standing life career devoted to social commitment, the process of European integration, the promotion of multilateralism and human dignity as the core of his work, addressing global challenges and crises. He has been a key figure in facing a period of unprecedented change and with terrible consequences for Europe and the world. With his tenacious work he has promoted actions to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic, to the war in Ukraine, to address the climate emergency and achieve ambitious reforms with which to face the challenges of the 21st century. Also noteworthy is his determination to fight against one of the greatest challenges facing Europe and humanity, climate change, promoting sustainable development and placing the 2030 Agenda as the global roadmap focused on people and the planet. All these merits and more that he has, in the opinion of the jury, make him a worthy winner of the Carlos V European Award in its 16th edition.

António Manuel de Oliveira Guterres (born in Lisbon on 30 April 1949) is a Portuguese politician, physics engineer and professor. Since 1 January 2017, he has been the current Secretary-General of the United Nations. On 18 June 2021 he was re-elected for a second five-year term, which officially began on 1 January 2022.

He previously served as Prime Minister of Portugal (1995-2002), he was appointed United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on 15 June 2005, where he served until 15 December 2015, heading the organisation during some of the worst refugee crises in history, including Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq.

European Disability Forum

Award 2022

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation celebrated the award ceremony of the Carlos V European Award on 11 May 2022 at the Royal Monastery of Yuste. It has been granted to the European Disability Forum, in this edition and the ceremony was presided over by His Majesty King Felipe VI.

The jury of the 15th edition of the Carlos V European Award, granted by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, decided to award the prize to European Disability Forum  “a European NGO that brings together organisations representing 100 million people with disabilities and their families across Europe. The EDF celebrates its 25th anniversary this year; a time it has employed defending the rights of people with disabilities and promoting their inclusion, caring for those who need it most and who suffer multiple discrimination for having different capacities, valuing their dignity as people and the great value they are to society. Through its work, the EDF promotes a more inclusive Europe and a more social, just and egalitarian Europe, and contributes to the process of European integration, to the values that the European Union defends and to ensuring that all citizens can live together in this common area on an equal footing and without being discriminated against because of their social capacities. It thus favours a more humane Europe that focuses on the well-being of its citizens, providing strong legal frameworks to defend inclusion, accessibility, freedom of movement, independent life, dignity, non-discrimination, active and effective participation in society, respect for difference as part of human diversity and other fundamental rights and freedoms”.

The European Disability Forum is an organisation of people with disabilities that has been defending the interests of more than 100 million people with disabilities in Europe for 25 years. It is an independent nongovernmental organisation (NGO) bringing together organisations representing people with disabilities from all over Europe. They are run by people with disabilities and their families. They are a strong and united voice of people with disabilities in Europe. They advocate the inclusion of people with disabilities in European Union (EU) policy and beyond. Its mission is to ensure the full inclusion of persons with disabilities in society. Also, to ensure access to human rights through active participation in policy development, implementation and monitoring of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Europe.

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation celebrated the award ceremony of the Carlos V European Award on 14 October 2021 at the Royal Monastery of Yuste. It has been granted to the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Angela Merkel, in this edition and the ceremony was presided over by His Majesty King Felipe VI.

The jury of the 14th edition of the Carlos V European Award, granted by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, decided to award the prize to German Chancellor Angela Merkel in “recognition of her long political career in the service of Europe, having been a strong supporter of the European integration process and of the strategic role of Europe in the international scene“.

Angela Merkel, German Chancellor, was born in Hamburg in 1954. She moved to the German Democratic Republic as soon as she was born where her father received a pastorate in the church of Quitzow. She studied Physics at the University of Leipzig, earning a PhD with the highest honours.

In 1990, after German reunification, she was elected a member of the Bundestag representing the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU). In December 1990 she was appointed Minister of Women and Youth in the government of German Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who was also awarded the Carlos V European Award in 2006. In 1994 she was appointed Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

In 2005 she won the general election and was elected German Chancellor; a position she has held for three more terms, having won the elections in 2009, 2013 and 2017.

The jury of the 13th edition of the Carlos V European Award has decided to grant the award to the initiative of the “The Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe” for its work promoting European values related with cultural diversity, the respect for the respective identities, the intercultural dialogue, and the exchange and knowledge about the countries and its History.

The jury also underlined the work that the Routes do fostering cooperation in research and development; enhancement of memory, history and European heritage; cultural and educational exchanges for young Europeans; contemporary cultural and artistic practice; and the cultural tourism.

Likewise, the jury has considered the image and the position of Europe that the Cultural Routes project beyond the European borders and its relations with the rest of the world.

The jury also highlighted that it is a project involving different actors at different levels among them governments and countries, international institutions, regions, municipalities, organizations from the civil society, associations, museums, foundations, universities, companies and thousands of citizens, including the express participation of young people. Thus the CULTURAL ITINERARIES OF THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE contribute in this way to the process of European integration through history, culture, heritage and active citizenship, and in addition contribute to social, cultural, economic and sustainable local, national and European development.

The Cultural Routes programme was launched by the Council of Europe in 1987 with the Declaration of Santiago de Compostela. The programme intends to demonstrate, by means of a journey through space and time, how the heritage of the different countries and cultures of Europe contributes to a shared cultural heritage (1).

The programme is made up now of 38 certified cultural routes, with more than 1600 members, which cross 61 countries in four continents. The routes provide a wealth of leisure and educational activities for all citizens across Europe and beyond, with members coming from the Mediterranean basin and the African, American and Asian continents. The routes develop through their activities key resources for responsible tourism and sustainable development. They cover a range of different themes, from architecture and landscape to religious influences, from gastronomy and intangible heritage to the major figures of European art, music and literature. Spain is one of the programme’s privileged settings, with 21 routes across the country. Emperor Charles V’s route, based in Cuacos de Yuste, includes over 80 members in 11 countries in Europe, Africa and America and is a certified Cultural Route of the Council of Europe since 2015.

The certification “Cultural Route of the Council of Europe” is a guarantee of excellence. The networks implement innovative activities and projects pertaining to five main priority fields of action: co-operation in research and development; enhancement of memory, history and European heritage; cultural and educational exchanges for young Europeans; contemporary cultural and artistic practice; cultural tourism and sustainable cultural development. Through its programme, the Council of Europe offers a model for transnational cultural and tourism management and allows synergies between national, regional and local authorities and a wide range of associations and socio-economic actors.

The Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe are an invitation to travel and to discover the rich and diverse heritage of Europe by bringing people and places together in networks of shared history and heritage. They put into practice the values of the Council of Europe: human rights, cultural diversity, intercultural dialogue and mutual exchanges across borders, and they build bridges among countries, regions, local authorities and citizens through common and shared projects across the European Union and beyond, which reinforce Europe’s image outside the continent and its relations with the rest of the world.

In the 12th edition, the Jury of the Carlos V European Award has decided that the award goes to H.E. Mr. Antonio Tajani. With this award the jury has wanted to give acknowledgement to “a political career that spans a period of almost 25 years dedicated to the European Union and to his firm defence of strong European institutions based on European values of democracy, liberty, equality, and respect for the rule of law”.

Country: Italy

 

Antonio Tajani is the son of an Italian Army officer and a Latin and Greek professor. He lived in France for five years, where he and his family accompanied his father to NATO command. He holds a degree in Law from the Sapienza University of Rome. Before choosing to dedicate his life to politics, Antonio Tajani was an officer in the Italian Air Force. After attending a specialised air defence course at Borgo Piave di Latina, he joined the NATO Air Defence Ground Environment (NADGE).

Antonio Tajani has also been a professional journalist for more than 20 years. He started as presenter of news programmes on Rai Radio 1 (Italian public radiotelevision) before Indro Montanelli, the most well-known and revered Italian journalist of the twentieth century, asked him to work for the newspaper “Il Giornale”.

Antonio Tajani was elected President of the European Parliament in January 2017, having based his candidacy on an agenda aimed at bringing people closer to the only directly elected European institution. He is driven by the strong belief that Europe’s strength should derive from the solutions it provides to the real daily concerns of European citizens and these should currently focus on three specific areas of action: security, migration and youth employment.

He insists on the belief that the European Union’s success is based on the promotion of the values of democracy and the rule of law; on those of equality, solidarity, human dignity and justice. He held his position as President of the European Parliament after having been elected First Vice President in 2014.

Antonio Tajani has carried out most of his political career at European level. He has been a member of the European Parliament since 1994; Vice President of the European Commission and European Commissioner for Transport between 2008 and 2010; Vice President of the European Commission and European Commissioner for Industry and Entrepreneurship between 2010 and 2014. He was, furthermore, a member of the Convention on the Future of Europe. Since 2002, Mr Tajani has been First Vice President of the European People’s Party.

Also of note is his tireless work in promoting the concept of Europe and praising European values, especially those related to European cultural diversity and the protection of human rights”..

Sofia Corradi received the Carlos V European Award 2016, given by the European Academy of Yuste Foundation, at a ceremony held on 9th May 2016 at the Royal Monastery of Yuste (Caceres, Extremadura), presided over by His Majesty the King of Spain. With this award, the jury wishes to recognize “her career and, above all, her great commitment and contribution to the process of European integration by means of the design and implementation of the ERASMUS initiative of the European Union, as well as her work and endeavour on behalf of academic mobility, focussing on young European students as a guarantee of tomorrow and the future of Europe”.

The Italian professor Sofia Corradi has been awarded the Carlos V European Award by the European Academy of Yuste Foundation. This took place in a solemn ceremony presided by Felipe VI, attending for the first time as King of Spain, before various national and European authorities who wished to endorse their support and recognition to Sofia Corradi, driver of the Erasmus programme. The award coincides with the celebration of Europe Day.

In his speech, Felipe VI had an emotional thought for the families of the thirteen young Erasmus students who recently died in a traffic accident in Tarragona. The King recognized the Erasmus programme as “a social and emotional network, twinning supranational affections, which builds Europe from the base, from its most genuine values”.

Moreover, he urged unity of European citizens and the values we share in the current situation of the European Union, because now more than ever, “commitment, determination and responsibility are needed, all values on which the Union is founded and that inspire our coexistence in democracy: freedom, human rights and solidarity”. The King appealed to the contribution of new generations for the “Union to always maintain and affirm those values”, because “Europe is stronger than all the uncertainties stalking the world today”.

The ceremony was attended by an Erasmus delegation of the countries of the European Union, with a majority representation of Erasmus student from the University of Barcelona, as a tribute to the deceased Erasmus girls.

During the ceremony, the President of Extremadura, Guillermo Fernández Vara, spoke. He stressed that the Foundation was created to be “a symbol of unity and projection into a territory where the greatest border is the commitment to make progress in culture, in reflection, in citizenship, where solidarity among peoples and individuals is the greater reality”. The President of the Extremadura Government emphasized the value of youth in society because “they are the link we have with our future”. In this regard, he added that the Erasmus + programme is an “integrating project”, that not only affects millions of students, but has a “multiplier and inclusive effect, expanding knowledge, spreading autonomy and opening borders”.

Meanwhile, Sofia Corradi said during her speech that “the Erasmus programme is not only a privilege for a few, but an opportunity for many”, and added that “the most prominent feature of Erasmus is the life experience, the experience of a full immersion in a different culture”. According to the award-winner, the Erasmus experience “includes the ability to communicate, to cooperate in a team and to solve unexpected problems through innovative solutions”. Sofia Corradi explained that in devising the Erasmus programme, she began her “personal campaign for peace” as it was conceived in 1969, during the Cold War. She also encouraged Spanish institutions to encourage their Latin American counterparts to share future projects.

The President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, also participated in the event. In his speech, he praised the Carlos V European Award because “it honours men and women for their outstanding merits in favour of the European idea”, exemplifying the figure of Sofia Corradi for his defence of the European project. Schulz highlighted the role of Spain as being the country of the European Union which had sent and received more Erasmus students, and also “one of the most pro-European countries in the Union”. Finally, he stressed the importance of personal relationships at present “when the centrifugal forces of the crisis threaten to separate us”.

The Carlos V European Award has the institutional support of the European Parliament, it is sponsored by the Ministry of Education, University and Research of the Italian Government, and it is supported by the collaborating institutions Caja Rural de Extremadura and Extremadura Avante.

Over 20 regional, national and international media were accredited today, in addition to blogs on today’s European politics.
The Amadeus-In choir from Puebla de la Calzada (Badajoz) has enlivened the closing ceremony with the hymn of Europe.

The ceremony was attended, among others, by the Minister of Education, Culture and Sports, Íñigo Méndez de Vigo y Montojo, the Minister of Education, University and Research of the Government of Italy, Stefania Giannini, and the Deputy Minister of Portugal, Eduardo Cabrita, along with several members of the European Academy of Yuste as Marcelino Oreja, Abram de Swaan, Gustaaf Jannsens and Juan Carlos Rodríguez Ibarra.

The president of the European Commission, José Manuel Durão Barroso, received the Carlos V European Award 2014, given by the European Academy of Yuste Foundation, at a ceremony held on 16th January 2014 at the Royal Monastery of Yuste (Caceres, Extremadura), which was presided over by His Royal Highness, the Prince of Asturias. The Jury of the ‘Charles V European Award’ decided to reward José Manuel Durão Barroso (Lisbon, 23rd March, 1956), President of the European Commission, for his career, his commitment to the European unification policy, his work in the interest of citizen participation in the process of European integration, and his commitment to bringing Europe closer to its citizens, seeking always the common good above individual interests.

The president of the European Commission, José Manuel Durão Barroso, received the Charles V European Award 2014 from His Royal Highness, The Prince of Asturias at a ceremony which took place on 16 January 2014 at the Royal Monastery of Yuste (Caceres, Extremadura), headquarters of the European Academy of Yuste Foundation, the institution which presents this European award.

Numerous leading international figures attending, among these were the President of Spain, Mariano Rajoy who was charged with delivering a tribute to the recipient; the Prime Minister of the Republic of Portugal, Pedro Passos Coelho; the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, José Manuel García-Margallo, and the president of the Regional Government of Extremadura, José Antonio Monago Terraza.

The jury decided to reward the work of Durão Barroso “for his track record, and his commitment within the sphere of European unification policy, his work in favour of citizen participation in the European integration process, and his commitment to bringing Europe closer to its citizens, always placing the general interests of the people above those of the individual”. They also highlighted his support of a stronger Europe at an international level “where not just economic, financial and political interests are taken into account, but also those that most concern the citizens and where culture plays an essential role in the process of European construction and the future of the old
continent”. The jury, in addition, noted the recipient’s commitment “in representing European general interests during a turbulent period of economic, political and social crisis, pushing even more for the European Union to be considered the only real solution common to all in order to resolve the biggest challenges being faced with a strengthened model of citizen integration so that the European Union continues to be an example of peace, democracy and prosperity to the rest of the world”.

It is worth noting that almost 100 communications media professionals of different nationalities covered the Charles V European Award ceremony, in which Telefónica and La Caixa participated as sponsors and Correos as partner. Millennium BCP, Vegenat, Organic and Café Delta also collaborated in this event.

Javier Solana Madariaga received the Carlos V European Award granted by the European Academy of Yuste on 11 February at a ceremony presided over by His Royal Highness, the Prince of Asturias at the Royal Monastery of Yuste. The jury decided to reward the work of Javier Solana “for his track record, his commitment to international European policy and his work promoting peace and democracy as High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy of the European Union”.
