Almost five centuries separate us from the controversial character that Hernán Cortés was. The character and his actions have awaken diverse and mixed feelings. In the 16^th century his personality already drew the attention of his contemporaries. Lucio Marineo Sículo and Francisco López de Gómara wrote about him, among others, and his actions did not go unnoticed to other historians of his time, such as Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo and fray Bartolomé de las Casas. Literature, drama, poetry and music also immortalised Cortés throughout these years. Even Miguel de Cervantes mentioned the “cortesísimo Cortés” in Don Quixote and recalled the “great Hernando Cortés” in El licenciado Vidriera.

Miradas sobre Hernán Cortés includes a series of critical studies that situate the main character in circumstances of his time; they highlight his skills as a soldier, strategist, politician and negotiator and they point out his mistakes and mishaps. They, furthermore, present different interpretations of the character in the past five centuries.

The Hispanic cultural imprint in Latin America after the arrival of Europeans to the continent in 1492 and its control has important and endless consequences. In the case of Cuba, one of the last Spanish colonies in the Western hemisphere, this direct bond –as is well known- lasted until the later part of the 19^th century and was then reactivated in diverse ways during the first half of the past century along with the successive waves of migration of Spaniards to the Caribbean which continued to enrich the cultural wealth of the islands. It is pertinent to note that the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, founded in 1913, is Cuba’s most important museum institution. The importance and variety of its collections and the number of works gathered –approximately forty seven thousand and seven hundred pieces- including paintings, engravings, sculptures, drawings, ceramics, etc.-, make it the leading museum in the insular Caribbean and one of the most important ones in Latin America. His work explores identity issues, transsexuality, emergency poetics, socio-political landscapes and memory. El álbum de las rejas was written using two photo archives, the familiar and the personal one, employing a writing dynamic where the text is triggered by an image with the intention to create a third reading.
