Though the founding origins of the Saint Geronimo Royal Monastery of Yuste can be found in Plasencia and in the hermitage of San Salvador de la Sierra, situated between Cuacos and Garganta la Olla, the first construction of the complex, that we can still see today, dates back to 1402 when the owner of the land between Gilona and Vercelejo creeks (also known by the name of Yuste) gave it to the \u201cermita\u00f1os de la pobre vida\u201d [hermits devoted to a life of poverty] so that they could build a monastery.\u00a0 The hermits later came to be known by this name. Thanks to the generosity of the Counts of Oropesa and of Plasencia, among others, the complex was expanded during the 15th and 16th centuries to what we see today.\u00a0 The church and the two cloisters, one Gothic and the other from the Renaissance, are from this period and make up the monumental complex of this monastery.<\/p>\n
The history of the Monastery of Yuste would be altered in the middle of the 16th century and due to the wishes of Emperor Charles, would end its days here.\u00a0 On the 3 February 1557, Charles V arrived in Yuste.\u00a0 On 21 September 1558, the Emperor died in the palace which had been built on the southern side of the monastery.<\/p>\n
Today, both the palace and the monastery are considered to be exceptional examples of Spanish Renaissance architecture. Monastery of Saint Jerome at Yuste was integrated into Patrimonio Nacional (National Heritage, the Spanish institution responsible for managing state-owned properties) in 2004.<\/p>\n

Aunque los or\u00edgenes fundacionales del Monasterio de San Jer\u00f3nimo de Yuste se encuentran en Plasencia y en la ermita de San Salvador de la Sierra, situada entre las localidades de Cuacos y Garganta la Olla, la primera c\u00e9lula del edificio que hoy podemos contemplar se encuentra en 1402, a\u00f1o en el que el propietario de los terrenos existentes entre los arroyos Gilona y Vercelejo (conocido tambi\u00e9n con el nombre de Yuste) son cedidos por su propietario para que los \"ermita\u00f1os de la pobre vida\", nombre con el que se conoce a esta primera comunidad religiosa, pudieran levantar convento.<\/p>
A lo largo de los siglos XV y XVI el edificio monacal se amplia y configura hasta alcanzar el aspecto que hoy presenta, gracias a la generosidad, entre otros, de los Condes de Oropesa y de Plasencia. De estas centurias es la iglesia actual y los dos claustros, uno de factura g\u00f3tica y otro de tiempos renacentistas, que configuran el conjunto monumental del monasterio verato.<\/p>
La historia del Monasterio de Yuste se ver\u00e1 alterada a mediados del siglo XVI y como consecuencia de la voluntad del Emperador Carlos de acabar en este lugar sus d\u00edas. El 3 de febrero de 1557 tiene lugar la entrada de Carlos Ven Yuste. El 21 de septiembre de 1558 se produc\u00eda la muerte del Emperador en el Palacio que se hace construir en el lado meridional del convento y que forma hoy con \u00e9ste un conjunto excepcional en la historia de la arquitectura espa\u00f1ola del Renacimiento.<\/p>
