The Director General of External Action, Rosa Balas, presented the call for the 12th edition of the \u201cCarlos V European Award\u201d, a prize awarded by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation which acknowledges the work of people, institutions and initiatives that have contributed to the \u201cgeneral knowledge\u201d and \u201cenhancement\u201d of Europe\u2019s values, this Monday in M\u00e9rida.<\/p>\n
The head of External Action and the director of the Foundation, Juan Carlos Moreno, have announced that the call for this 12th edition will shortly be published in the Official Journal of Extremadura (DOE), thus opening the period for the submission of nominations. The deadline for submission is the 15th of February.<\/p>\n
In line with tradition, the award will be delivered on Europe Day, on the 9th of May, at the Royal Monastery of Yuste.<\/p>\n
As far as the award ceremony is concerned, which usually gathers European personalities from all areas, Rosa Balas has mentioned the \u201cunconditional support of the Royal House and King Felipe VI\u201d, who has presided over the last editions of the ceremony \u201cand who, we hope, will continue to do so in the future\u201d.<\/p>\n
In her remarks, the Director General pointed out that the event of the 9th of May situates Extremadura \u201cat the heart of Europe\u201d as it is \u201cthe most important\u201d of those celebrated in Spain and one of \u201cthe most relevant\u201d events in Europe.<\/p>\n
She also recalled that the award ceremony, which always involves the participation of a prominent person from the European Union, as was the case of Martin Schultz and Antonio Tajani, in the last two editions, both as presidents of the European Paliament.<\/p>\n
Throughout history, the prize has been awarded to Jacques Delors, Felipe Gonz\u00e1lez, Helmut Kohl, Mijail Gorbachov, Simone Veil and Sofia Corradi, among other personalities in the realm of politics. In its last edition of 2017, the award was delivered to the Spanish politician Marcelino Oreja.<\/p>\n
RESEARCH GRANTS<\/strong><\/p>\n As a distinctive feature of the call for the \u201cCarlos V European Award\u201d, Rosa Balas has highlighted the fact that the prize is accompanied by the European Research and Mobility Grants for European Studies. This means that the winner (or the winning institution) \u201cchooses a subject\u201d which will allow ten researchers to work with scholars of other European and Latin-American countries for a period of two years and to collaborate with the winner and with other academics.<\/p>\n These grants, she added, allow the creation of the \u201cRed Alumni\u201d (Alumni Network) of the Yuste Foundation, where more than ninety students from different nationalities have been part of it and carry out a doctoral seminar at the Foundation\u2019s headquarters, at the Monastery of Yuste, during the Summer Campus.<\/p>\n Moreover, the resulting works are published by the prestigious publishing house of scientific works, Peter Lang.<\/p>\n The Director General pointed out that the works of the grants named after Sofia Corradi (awarded in 2016) are presently underway and these will conclude with their presentation in Rome.
