The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation organises the conference \u201cPerspectives and Challenges of Health Promotion and Health Education in Latin America\u201d at the graduate room of the Faculty of Sport Sciences, on the 9th of April at 09:30 am. The conference will be given by the professor of the University of Puerto Rico and President of the Red Iberoamericana de Universidades Promotoras de la Salud, RIUPS, (Ibero-American Network of Health Promoting Universities), Hiram V. Arroyo.<\/p>\n

The talk is included in Aula Euro Iberoam\u00e9rica, a programme launched by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation to enable Extremaduran university students to finish their academic training with the contribution of experts in different social, economic and cultural areas. Over 2400 students have attended these sessions since the programme started in 2014.<\/p>\n

AN OVERVIEW OF THE CONFERENCE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hiram V. Arroyo points out that \u201cHealth promotion is considered one of the current health paradigms with global reach\u201d. This was institutionally brought up in 1986 in the Ottawa Charter of the World Health Organisation (WHO). \u201cHealth Promotion proposes a new view concerning health issues from the standpoint of health social determinants and focusing on healthy environments; it is a proposal of political action and community mobilisation which intends to cause a positive impact on the citizens\u2019 wellbeing and quality of life\u201d.<\/p>\n

Dr. Hiram V. Arroyo\u2019s conference will deal with the dominant conceptual and methodological perspectives of Health Promotion and will highlight the current criticism and challenges faced by Health Promotion with particular emphasis on the experience of Latin America.<\/p>\n

ABOUT HIRAM V. ARROYO<\/strong><\/p>\n

Hiram V. Arroyo is the coordinator of the Red Iberoamericana de Universidades Promotoras de la Salud, RIUPS, (Ibero-American Network of Health Promoting Universities); Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Training and Research in Health Promotion and Health Education. He has been the Regional Director for Latin America of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE) since the year 2000; is the coordinator of the Inter-American Consortium of Universities and Training Centres of Health Promotion and Health Education for Personnel (CIUEPS). He has been a visiting professor in Latin American and European universities, including Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, Spain, Mexico, Portugal and the Dominican Republic. His main research focuses on subjects such as Health Promotion, Health Education, School Health Promotion and Global Health. He has published nine books and over a hundred professional articles.<\/p>\n
