The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation organises the conference \u201cEuropean Union, Federation or Reich?\u201d, given by the former President of the European Parliament, Enrique Bar\u00f3n, on Wednesday 21st February in C\u00e1ceres, at the Faculty of Law.<\/strong><\/p>\n This event is part of Aula Euro Iberoam\u00e9rica, a programme launched by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation so that Extremaduran university students may complete their academic training with the contribution of experts from different social, economic and cultural fields, among others.<\/p>\n A SUMMARY OF THE CONFERENCE<\/strong><\/p>\n Enrique Bar\u00f3n assures that \u201cat a moment where the EU is overcoming the crisis and European elections draw near, a crucial issue should be reconsidered: Federation or Reich (Empire); to know which political system we are building.\u201d<\/p>\n He considers that a window of opportunity opens during the first semester of 2018 to answer this question because it is possible to take a step forward to complete the Economic and Monetary Union, consolidating it as a pioneer democracy within globalization with rules and, in his opinion, \u201cSpain should reflect on its role in the construction of Europe, regaining prominence and commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n ABOUT ENRIQUE BAR\u00d3N<\/strong><\/p>\n Enrique Bar\u00f3n was born in Madrid in 1944. He is a lawyer and economist, has a Phd in Law from the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and has a degree in Business Administration by ESSEC (Paris) and ICADE (Madrid).<\/p>\n He worked as a human rights lawyer under franquist dictatorship, has been a professor at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and at the ICADE Business School, and has been President of the Euroforum University Institute. \nHe was Deputy in the Spanish General Courts (1977-87) and the Minister of the Spanish Government that concluded the accession negotiations to join the European Community (1986-2009); President of the European Parliament (1989-92) and of the Foreign Affairs (1992-4) and International Trade (2004-7) Committees, as well as Chairman of the Socialist Group (1999-2004).<\/p>\n
