CONFERENCE: \u201cEUROPEAN UNION, FEDERATION OR REICH?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

AN OVERVIEW OF THE CONFERENCE<\/p>\n

Enrique Bar\u00f3n assures that \u201cat a moment where the EU is overcoming the crisis and European elections draw near, a crucial issue should be reconsidered: Federation or Reich (Empire); to know which political system we are building.\u201d<\/p>\n

He considers that a window of opportunity opens during the first semester of 2018 to answer this question because it is possible to take a step forward to complete the Economic and Monetary Union, consolidating it as a pioneer democracy within globalization with rules and, in his opinion, \u201cSpain should reflect on its role in the construction of Europe, regaining prominence and commitment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Enrique Bar\u00f3n naci\u00f3 en Madrid en 1944. Es abogado y economista, Doctor en Derecho por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM); licenciado en Administraci\u00f3n de Empresas por ESSEC (Par\u00eds) e ICADE (Madrid).<\/p>\n

Ejerci\u00f3 de abogado de Derechos Humanos durante la dictadura franquista, y ha sido profesor de la UCM, ICADE y presidente del Instituto Universitario Euroforum.<\/p>\n

Fue diputado constituyente en Espa\u00f1a (1977-87), y el ministro del Gobierno de Espa\u00f1a que concluy\u00f3 las negociaciones de adhesi\u00f3n a la Comunidad Europea (1982-85), as\u00ed como diputado al Parlamento Europeo (1986-2009), presidente del Parlamento Europeo (1989-92) y de las comisiones de Asuntos Exteriores (1992-4) y Comercio Internacional (2004-7), as\u00ed como presidente del Grupo Socialista (1999-2004).<\/p>\n

Enrique Bar\u00f3n es catedr\u00e1tico Jean Monnet \u201cad personam\u201d; presidente de la \u201cFundaci\u00f3n Yehudi Menuhin; miembro del Consejo de \u201cNotre Europe\u201d; Trustee de Friends of Europe; vicepresidente del Instituto de l\u2019Opera e la Poes\u00eda di Verona (UNESCO); y patrono de la Fundaci\u00f3n Dal\u00ed.<\/p>\n

Habla siete lenguas europeas. Es autor de ensayos y art\u00edculos sobre temas pol\u00edticos, econ\u00f3micos y sociales. Sus libros m\u00e1s recientes son \u2018Europa, Pasi\u00f3n y Raz\u00f3n\u2019, \u2018Constitucionalizaci\u00f3n del Poder Legislativo de la Uni\u00f3n Europea\u2019; \u2018El error del milenio\u2019, \u2018Tratado de Lisboa y Carta de Derechos Fundamentales\u2019, \u2018Las Am\u00e9ricas insurgentes\u2019, Memorias europeas \u2018M\u00e1s Europa, \u00a1Unida!\u2019 y \u2018 La Era del federalismo\u2019 (RBA).<\/p>\n
