This year, the prize has been delivered to the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani. The President of the Regional Government of Extremadura, Guillermo Fernández Vara, also participated in the ceremony which was presided over by His Majesty King Felipe VI.

During his address, Felipe VI indicated that many of the yearnings that guided Charles V in pursuit of concord among nations are now present in present day Europe and has welcomed the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation´s decision to increase its scope of action as it “responds to the European identity and to Extremadura´s Ibero-American vocation”.

He defined the award winner as “a European by conviction, an Italian by nature and a great friend of Spain” and thanked him for the role he played in the “formation of a real European demos; in the coexistence among people and the continental Member States as for his work in the understanding among the institutions of the EU”.
“Today, the European supranational project lies in the need to overcome scepticism, where it’s been submerged for too long”, declared the King in his speech, opting for the withdrawal of excluding and unsupporting ideas of the coexistence among the diverse and pluralistic societies we live in.

In this sense, Felipe VI pointed out the need to “restore the dream, the enthusiasm and the faith in Europe; a project that should be efficient and that deserves confidence within and outside the Union; a project based on a system of standards with a vision of the world that is rooted in our classical, humanistic and illustrated tradition along with our universal projection”.

The President of the Regional Government of Extremadura, Guillermo Fernández Vara, has, likewise, stated that more work should be done as far as dialogue, integration and joint action is concerned, in order to face Europe´s great challenges. He valued Tajani’s work in favour of the strengthening of institutions and coexistence with equal opportunities, advocating for democracy and the Rule of Law.

The President of the Regional Government of Extremadura affirmed that Extremadura and the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation’s commitment with Europe is firm. He has recalled that the merger between the European Academy of Yuste Foundation and the Extremaduran Centre for Studies and Cooperation with Ibero-America secures the desire to keep working on a common project.
Antonio Tajani’s speech

“There are no small homelands; there is just one” highlighted the new Carlos V award winner at the beginning of his speech, convinced that when separated, nations are tiny and powerless, but when united “we’ll have the strength to overcome any given challenge”, he said. According to him, it is the European citizens who make the peace, the stability and the prosperity that embodies the European Union possible. This is why he dedicated the Award to them.

The President of the European Parliament argued that the European Union should assume greater global responsibility and have a positive influence on the international scene. “It is necessary to create closer ties with countries that are committed to democracy and the openness to trade” and he used Ibero-America as an example, claiming that it is a natural ally due to its history, location, culture and shared interests. He has also appreciated the effort of civic harmony that made the incorporation of Spain into the European Union possible, “Without Spain, the European Union would be an incomplete dream”. The renovation of our project implies facing the current threat hovering over the European democracy”, assured Tajani, referring himself to the fraudulent influence in electoral processes; the “tsunami” of fake news that spreads on social networks; the reaffirmation of a commitment to quality and the defence of the rule of law against populist and nationalist movements.

Antonio Tajani mentioned the modern single market; a European budget that may keep up with the new challenges, and a more democratic and transparent European economic governance as necessary tools to be able to recover from the crisis.

Among other personalities, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Alfonso María Dastis Quecedo and award winners of the Carlos V European Award previous editions, such as Felipe González, Jorge Sampaio, Sofia Corradi and Marcelino Oreja, have attended the ceremony.
