In the case of Cuba, one of the last Spanish colonies in the Western hemisphere, this direct bond \u2013as is well known- lasted until the later part of the 19th<\/sup> century and was then reactivated in diverse ways during the first half of the past century along with the successive waves of migration of Spaniards to the Caribbean which continued to enrich the cultural wealth of the islands. It is pertinent to note that the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, founded in 1913, is Cuba\u2019s most important museum institution. The importance and variety of its collections and the number of works gathered \u2013approximately forty seven thousand and seven hundred pieces- including paintings, engravings, sculptures, drawings, ceramics, etc.-, make it the leading museum in the insular Caribbean and one of the most important ones in Latin America.
