The first and essential value of this book, by Manuel Ma\u00f1as N\u00fa\u00f1ez -university researcher and professor form the Science of Antiquity Department of the University of Extremadura- is the fact that it is the first monograph on the life and work of Juan Bl\u00e1zquez Mayoralgo, a citizen of C\u00e1ceres who left to New Spain as Accountant of the Royal Estate of New Veracruz and who remained in this post for more than twenty years. During that time, he was not only vigilant in meeting his bureaucratic duties, but was the most direct witness of the vicissitudes and problems that New Spain was going through, while still finding moments of leisure to satisfy his literary inquisitiveness with the processing and publication of his main work: La perfecta raz\u00f3n de Estado, a history and political theory book about King Ferdinand the Catholic<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Briefly looking into the content of the book, it should be pointed out that in the first chapter the life and work of our main character is described as accurately as possible (as at times there is a lack of reliable documents), the fixation of the most significant landmarks as well as the job he carried out in New Spain. In the second chapter a study of his main work La perfecta raz\u00f3n de Estado<\/em> (The Perfect Reason of State<\/em>) is made including it in his political-literary context and analysing the historical and political content of each one of the books that it comprises. In Chapter 3, Dr. Ma\u00f1as writes about Juan Bl\u00e1zquez\u2019s circle of Novohispano friends (Francisco de Samaniego, Fern\u00e1ndez de Castro, among others) in American soil. Finally, in the last chapter other works of our main character are briefly analysed: La Antuerpia<\/em> and El Carmelo<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Everything concerning the work of Manuel Ma\u00f1as is interesting and, on many occasions, innovative. However, Chapter 2 may be more interesting to historians, philosophers and philologists than the rest, as a doctrinal framework appears in it with political content on the Estate and Government of the Crown Princes. Juan Bl\u00e1zquez parting from a declared anti-Machiavellianism, leads his thought to a neo-tacitism and a neo-stoicism which \u2013mainly inherited from Justo Lipsio- are constituted in the theoretical pillars of his idea of Estate. In sum, this monograph has the historiographic rigour expected in any study in this scientific field, as source documents have been consulted, cross-checked, interpreted and theses based on the testing of the hypotheses have been pointed out. The opinions of other scholars and researchers have, likewise, been exposed so that they may be compared. Furthermore, as an added value, the reading of this book \u2013in spite of the obstacles of the numerous time-related and local references, dates and places in America- is quite enjoyable for the ordinary reader, as its main characters\u2019 vital steps, in the midst of skirmishes and dangers, of adhesion oaths and disloyalties, are truly fictional.<\/p>\n

El primer y esencial valor de este libro de Manuel Ma\u00f1as N\u00fa\u00f1ez, investigador y profesor universitario perteneciente al Departamento de Ciencias de la Antig\u00fcedad de la Universidad de Extremadura, est\u00e1 en que se trata de la primera monograf\u00eda dedicada a la vida y obra de Juan Bl\u00e1zquez Mayoralgo, personaje cacere\u00f1o que march\u00f3 a Nueva Espa\u00f1a como Contador de la Real Hacienda de la Nueva Veracruz y que permaneci\u00f3 en el desempe\u00f1o de ese cargo durante m\u00e1s de veinte a\u00f1os. En ese tiempo, adem\u00e1s de cumplir celosamente con sus tareas burocr\u00e1ticas, fue testigo m\u00e1s que directo de las vicisitudes y problemas por los que pasaba Nueva Espa\u00f1a, a la par que encontr\u00f3 momentos de ocio para satisfacer sus inquietudes literarias, con la elaboraci\u00f3n y publicaci\u00f3n de su principal obra, titulada\u00a0La perfecta raz\u00f3n de Estado<\/i>, un libro de historia y de teor\u00eda pol\u00edtica sobre el rey Fernando el Cat\u00f3lico.<\/p>

Entrando de manera sucinta en el contenido del libro, hay que decir que en el primer cap\u00edtulo se da cumplida y rigurosa cuenta de la vida y oficio de nuestro personaje, llegando hasta donde se puede (en ocasiones faltan documentos fidedignos) a la fijaci\u00f3n de los m\u00e1s significativos hitos vitales, as\u00ed como de la labor desempe\u00f1ada por \u00e9l en Nueva Espa\u00f1a. El cap\u00edtulo segundo est\u00e1 dedicado al estudio de su obra principal,\u00a0La perfecta raz\u00f3n de Estado<\/i>, incardin\u00e1ndola en su contexto pol\u00edtico-literario y analizando el contenido hist\u00f3rico y pol\u00edtico de cada uno de los libros que la componen. En el cap\u00edtulo tercero el Dr. Ma\u00f1as da cuenta del c\u00edrculo de amigos novohispanos (Francisco de Samaniego, Fern\u00e1ndez de Castro, entre otros) que tuvo Juan Bl\u00e1zquez en tierras americanas. Finalmente, en el \u00faltimo cap\u00edtulo, se analizan someramente otras dos obras de nuestro personaje:\u00a0La Antuerpia<\/i>\u00a0y\u00a0El Carmelo<\/i>.<\/p>

Todo en el trabajo de Manuel Ma\u00f1as resulta interesante y, en muchas ocasiones, innovador. Sin embargo, es el cap\u00edtulo segundo el que resulta m\u00e1s atractivo para historiadores, fil\u00f3sofos y fil\u00f3logos, ya que en \u00e9l aparece todo un aparato doctrinal de tem\u00e1tica pol\u00edtica sobre el Estado y el gobierno de los pr\u00edncipes: Juan Bl\u00e1zquez, partiendo de un antimaquiavelismo declarado, deriva su pensamiento en un neotacitismo y neoestoicismo que, heredado principal aunque no exhaustivamente de Justo Lipsio, se constituyen en los pilares te\u00f3ricos de su idea de Estado. En resumen, esta monograf\u00eda goza del rigor historiogr\u00e1fico exigido en todo estudio de este \u00e1mbito cient\u00edfico, ya que se han consultado las fuentes documentales, se han cotejado, se han interpretado y, finalmente, se han apuntado tesis basadas en la comprobaci\u00f3n de las distintas hip\u00f3tesis. Asimismo, se han expuesto, para su comparaci\u00f3n, las opiniones de anteriores estudiosos e investigadores. Adem\u00e1s, como valor a\u00f1adido, la lectura de este trabajo -a pesar del obst\u00e1culo de las muchas referencias temporales y locales, de fechas y lugares de Am\u00e9rica- se hace bastante amena para el lector com\u00fan, ya que los pasos vitales de estos personajes, en medio de escaramuzas y peligros, entre juramentos de adhesi\u00f3n y deslealtades, son aut\u00e9nticamente novelescos.<\/p>
