The international congress \u201cCharles V, Vitoria and Erasmus in Yuste\u201d closed today at the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature of the University of Extremadura with the presence of the President of the Regional Government of Extremadura, Guillermo Fern\u00e1ndez Vara; the Rectors of the Universities of Extremadura, Salamanca and San Pablo CEU: Segundo P\u00edriz, Ricardo Rivero and Antonio Calvo respectively, as well as with representatives from the academic, social, business, cultural and the world of the Third Sector.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Rector of the University of Extremadura emphasised the good judgement in celebrating this congress that \u201cdefends historical reflection as an analysis device of the present time\u201d.<\/p>\n

P\u00edriz highlighted the figure of Francisco de Vitoria, pointing out that he \u201cfaced the greatest intellectual challenges of his time, renewing methods and subjects and creating a real school of Jewish Theological thought\u201d. As far as Erasmus of Rotterdam is concerned, the Rector claimed that \u201chis obsessive concern about the reformation of the Church considered the deprivation of paganism in Christian customs and ceremonies\u201d. P\u00edriz said that the \u201cErasmism relates to thinking freely and tolerating the thoughts of others\u201d. All these ideas had an influence on Charles V\u2019s political action. In his opinion, Charles V, Vitoria and Erasmus operate as \u201carchitectonical elements of the construction of Europe\u201d.<\/p>\n

To conclude, P\u00edriz has referred to Yuste as \u201ca place of vital revision for Charles V and of analysis and reflection for everyone through the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation\u201d.<\/p>\n

Finally, the Director of the congress, former winner of the Carlos V European Award and member of the Academy of Yuste, Marcelino Oreja, presented the conclusions of the sessions. During his speech, Oreja pointed out that this congress attempted to highlight the figure and ideas of Francisco de Vitoria which \u201cshaped international law and were the origin of modernity\u201d.<\/p>\n

Oreja added that the discovery of America opened the horizon towards a new unknown space, but -in his view- \u201ctoday there are other new worlds, other new challenges, such as globalisation; the threats to peace and international security; the risks affecting sustainable life on Earth or great displacements of those running away from wars, terrorism and poverty\u201d.<\/p>\n

It is in this spirit that the Director of the congress has defended the values European of liberty, equality, solidarity, men and women\u2019s dignity, pluralism and human rights in order to face new challenges.<\/p>\n

This congress has brought together academicians, jurists, historians and philosophers from national and international universities in Yuste. During three days, they have shared the conception of how important International Law is, as we understand it today, as a European invention where thinkers, such as Vitoria, contributed to create a set of concepts that were the answer to a period of geographical and spiritual discoveries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

El congreso internacional \u2018Carlos V, Vitoria y Erasmo en Yuste\u2019 se ha clausurado hoy en la Facultad de Filosof\u00eda y Letras de la Universidad de Extremadura con la presencia del presidente de la Junta de Extremadura, Guillermo Fern\u00e1ndez Vara; los rectores de las Universidades de Extremadura, Salamanca y de CEU San Pablo, Segundo P\u00edriz, Ricardo Rivero, y Antonio Calvo, respectivamente, as\u00ed como con representantes del mundo acad\u00e9mico, social, empresarial, cultural y del Tercer Sector.<\/strong><\/p>

El rector de la Universidad de Extremadura ha destacado el acierto en la celebraci\u00f3n de este congreso, que \u201crevindica la reflexi\u00f3n hist\u00f3rica como dispositivo de an\u00e1lisis del tiempo presente\u201d.<\/p>

P\u00edriz ha resaltado la figura de Francisco de Vitoria, se\u00f1alando que \u201cafront\u00f3 los mayores desaf\u00edos intelectuales de su \u00e9poca renovando m\u00e9todos y tem\u00e1ticas y originando una verdadera corriente de pensamiento teol\u00f3gico-jur\u00eddico\u201d. En cuanto a Erasmo de Rotterdam, el rector se\u00f1al\u00f3 que su \u201cobsesiva preocupaci\u00f3n por la reforma de la Iglesia pasaba por despojar las costumbres y ceremonias cristinas de paganismo\u201d. P\u00edriz dijo que el \u201cerasmismo consiste en pensar con libertad y tolerar el pensamiento ajeno\u201d. Todas estas ideas influyeron en la acci\u00f3n pol\u00edtica de Carlos V. A su juicio, Carlos V, Vitoria y Erasmo se configuran como \u201celementos arquitect\u00f3nicos de la construcci\u00f3n europea\u201d.<\/p>

Para finalizar, P\u00edriz se ha referido a Yuste como un \u201clugar de revisi\u00f3n vital para Carlos V y de an\u00e1lisis y reflexi\u00f3n para todos a trav\u00e9s de la Fundaci\u00f3n Academia Europea e Iberoamericana de Yuste\u2019\u201d.<\/p>

Por \u00faltimo, el director del congreso, Premio Europeo Carlos V y acad\u00e9mico de Yuste, Marcelino Oreja, ha presentado las conclusiones de las jornadas. Durante su intervenci\u00f3n, Oreja ha se\u00f1alado que este congreso ha querido poner en valor la figura y las ideas de Francisco de Vitoria \u201cconfiguradoras del derecho internacional y origen de la modernidad\u201d.<\/p>

Oreja ha a\u00f1adido que el descubrimiento de Am\u00e9rica abri\u00f3 el horizonte hacia un nuevo espacio desconocido, pero, a su juicio, \u201choy son otros los nuevos mundos, otros los nuevos desaf\u00edos, como la globalizaci\u00f3n; las amenazas a la paz y a la seguridad internacionales; los riesgos que afectan a la vida sostenible en la Tierra, o los grandes desplazamientos de personas que huyen de las guerras, del terrorismo y de la pobreza\u201d.<\/p>

En esta l\u00ednea, el director del congreso ha abogado por defender los valores europeos de libertad, igualdad, solidaridad, dignidad de hombres y mujeres, pluralismo y los derechos humanos para afrontar los nuevos retos.<\/p>

Este congreso ha reunido en Yuste a acad\u00e9micos, juristas, historiadores y fil\u00f3sofos provenientes de universidades nacionales e internacionales. Durante tres d\u00edas, han puesto en com\u00fan la importancia de que el Derecho Internacional, tal como lo entendemos hoy, es una invenci\u00f3n europea en donde pensadores como Vitoria, contribuyeron a crear un conjunto de conceptos que eran la respuesta a una \u00e9poca de descubrimientos geogr\u00e1ficos y espirituales.<\/p><\/div>
