The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation presented the comic Descalzos. Los doce ap\u00f3stoles de M\u00e9xico<\/em>, by the illustrator Mayte Alvarado in Guadalupe. This is the seventh volume of the Collection \u201cExtreme\u00f1os en Iberoam\u00e9rica y Europa-Historieta\u201d.<\/p>\n

This comic, narrated with Mayte Alvarado\u2019s care and deep poetic sensitivity, tells the story of a group of Franciscan friars -originally from the Convent of San Francisco in Belv\u00eds de Monroy- who left form the port of Sanl\u00facar de Barrameda in 1524 with the mission ordered by the Spanish Crown and the Catholic Church to evangelise the New World. They arrived in Veracruz, Mexico, almost four months later. Their adventure was not free of danger or vicissitudes, but their determination and conviction that the Indians were also children of God, helped them to overcome these obstacles. The regulated evangelisation of the new continent began with these twelve Franciscan friars, known as the Twelve Apostles of Mexico.<\/p>\n

The Academic Director of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, C\u00e9sar Chaparro; the Mayor of Guadalupe, Felipe S\u00e1nchez, and the author of the comic participated in the presentation.<\/p>\n

C\u00e9sar Chaparro pointed out that this publication is included in the Foundation\u2019s editorial line which encompasses different collections already consolidated, such as \u201cPensamiento Iberoamericano\u201d, \u201cExtreme\u00f1os en Iberoam\u00e9rica\u201d or this one: \u201cHistorieta\u201d, which aims to give visibility to those Extremaduran characters related to Ibero-America and whose action has been transcendent, but who are not as well-known as great names, such as Cort\u00e9s, Pizarro or N\u00fa\u00f1ez de Balboa, who have gone down in History.<\/p>\n

In this sense, Chaparro pointed out that with this publication the intention was to emphasise the figure of those missionaries and religious men \u201cwho sowed not only religion, but also culture and merged with the indigenous people and defended their rights, teaching them to read, write and rhetoric so that they could have access to works that would give them freedom of thought\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Academic Director of Yuste Foundation underlined the \u201cgreat importance\u201d of the twelve friars that left Belvis de Monroy in the \u201cdevelopment of religion and the first letters in Mexico\u201d as shown by the fact that their presence in those lands is \u201creferred to very positively by chroniclers and researchers\u201d. In this sense it is necessary to \u201cdefend all those who did not leave Extremadura with a sword in their hand, but with a cross and culture to improve the lives of those who lived there\u201d, Chaparro pointed out.<\/p>\n

The Mayor of Guadalupe was grateful to hold the presentation of the publication in this local community that is so closely linked to the evangelisation of the New World. These twelve friars were in some way \u201cthe origin of Christianism in Mexico\u201d, and he highlighted the indissoluble link between the Virgin of Guadalupe and that country.<\/p>\n

The author of the comic went into detail about how she assembled the comic focusing on themes, such as language or the foundation of schools, and it was on these grounds that she structured the publication in seven chapters preceded by a documentary text, graphically developing each chapter in a more poetical manner.<\/p>\n

This is Mayte Alvarado\u2019s first historical comic release and she pointed out that she seeked a rapprochement with the work carried out by the Franciscans.<\/p>\n

THE AUTHOR<\/em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Mayte Alvarado (Badajoz) is a comic author and illustrator. She codirected the independent printing house \u201cEl verano del Cohete\u201d and published the illustrated tale Miss Marjorie<\/em> as well as the comic E-19<\/em>. In her latest work she illustrated La casa de Bernarda Alba<\/em>, an edition recently published by Alfaguara Cl\u00e1sicos.<\/p>\n

EXTREME\u00d1OS EN IBEROAM\u00c9RICA Y EUROPA-HISTORIETA<\/em><\/p>\n

The collection \u201cExtreme\u00f1os en Iberoam\u00e9rica y Europa- Historieta\u201d, published by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, intends to recover essential characters in the history that Extremadura shares with America. The comic becomes an enjoyable and entertaining means of expression in order to convey these snippets of our history to all types of public. The rigour in the construction of history and its most adventurous aspect is added to this, because the attempt is also to make the reader want to know more about the character and our history through this reading.<\/p>\n

At present, seven volumes make up this collection. La Fundaci\u00f3n Academia Europea e Iberoamericana de Yuste ha presentado en Guadalupe el c\u00f3mic\u00a0\u2018Descalzos. Los doce ap\u00f3stoles de M\u00e9xico\u2019, de\u00a0la ilustradora extreme\u00f1a Mayte Alvarado, s\u00e9ptimo volumen de la colecci\u00f3n \u2018Extreme\u00f1os en Iberoam\u00e9rica y Europa-Historieta\u2019.<\/p>

Este c\u00f3mic, narrado con la delicadeza y la profunda sensibilidad po\u00e9tica de Mayte Alvarado, cuenta la historia de un grupo de frailes franciscanos, procedentes del Convento de San Francisco de Belv\u00eds de Monroy, que en enero de 1524 partieron del puerto de Sanl\u00facar de Barrameda con la misi\u00f3n, encomendada por la Corona espa\u00f1ola y la Iglesia Cat\u00f3lica, de evangelizar el Nuevo Mundo. Arribaron a Veracruz, en M\u00e9xico, casi cuatro meses despu\u00e9s. Su aventura no estuvo exenta de peligros y vicisitudes, pero sobre todas ellas triunf\u00f3 su entrega y su convencimiento de que los indios tambi\u00e9n eran hijos de Dios. Con estos doce frailes franciscanos dio comienzo la evangelizaci\u00f3n regulada del nuevo continente y son conocidos como los Doce Ap\u00f3stoles de M\u00e9xico.<\/p>

En el acto de presentaci\u00f3n han participado el director acad\u00e9mico de Fundaci\u00f3n Academia Europea e Iberoamericana de Yuste, C\u00e9sar Chaparro; el alcalde de Guadalupe, y la autora del c\u00f3mic.<\/p>

C\u00e9sar Chaparro ha se\u00f1alado que esta publicaci\u00f3n se incardina en la l\u00ednea editorial de la Fundaci\u00f3n que engloba a distintas colecciones ya consolidadas como Pensamiento Iberoamericano, Extreme\u00f1os en Iberoam\u00e9rica o esta de Historieta, que tiene el sentido de dar visibilidad a esos personajes extreme\u00f1os vinculados con Iberoam\u00e9rica y cuya acci\u00f3n ha sido trascendente pero que son menos conocidos que los grandes nombres como Cort\u00e9s, Pizarro o N\u00fa\u00f1ez de Balboa que han pasado a la Historia.<\/p>

En esta l\u00ednea, Chaparro ha se\u00f1alado que con esta publicaci\u00f3n se quer\u00eda poner el acento en esos misioneros y religiosos \u201cque no solo sembraron la religi\u00f3n, sino que sembraron tambi\u00e9n la cultura, que se fusionaron con los ind\u00edgenas y defendieron sus derechos, ense\u00f1\u00e1ndoles a leer, a escribir, ret\u00f3rica para que tuviesen acceso a obras que les iban a dar libertad de pensamiento\u201d.<\/p>

El director acad\u00e9mico de la Fundaci\u00f3n Yuste ha subrayado la \u201cgrand\u00edsima importancia\u201d de los doce frailes que salieron de Belv\u00eds de Monroy en el \u201cdesarrollo de la religi\u00f3n y de las primeras letras en M\u00e9xico\u201d, como lo demuestra que su presencia en esas tierras est\u00e1 \u201crecogida de una manera muy positiva por cronistas e investigadores\u201d. En este sentido, es necesario \u201creivindicar a todos aquellos que no salieron de Extremadura con la espada, sino que salieron con la cruz y la cultura para mejorar la vida de la gente de all\u00ed\u201d, ha apuntado Chaparro.<\/p>

Por su parte, el alcalde de Guadalupe ha agradecido que la presentaci\u00f3n de esta publicaci\u00f3n se lleve a cabo en esta poblaci\u00f3n tan vinculada con la evangelizaci\u00f3n del Nuevo Mundo, ya que estos doce frailes de alguna manera \u201cfueron el origen del cristianismo en M\u00e9xico\u201d, destacando la indisoluble relaci\u00f3n entre de la Virgen de Guadalupe con esta tierra.<\/p>

La autora del c\u00f3mic ha pormenorizado c\u00f3mo articul\u00f3 el c\u00f3mic en torno a temas como la lengua o la fundaci\u00f3n de escuelas y sobre estos argumentos estructur\u00f3 la publicaci\u00f3n en siete cap\u00edtulos que van precedidos por un texto documental, desarrollando gr\u00e1ficamente cada cap\u00edtulo de una manera m\u00e1s po\u00e9tica.<\/p>

Mayte Alvarado, que con esta publicaci\u00f3n se estrena en el c\u00f3mic hist\u00f3rico, ha se\u00f1alado que ha buscado un acercamiento a la labor que hicieron los franciscanos.<\/p>

Mayte Alvarado (Badajoz) es autora de c\u00f3mics e ilustradora. Codirigi\u00f3 la editorial independiente \u2018El verano del Cohete\u2019. La colecci\u00f3n \u2018Extreme\u00f1os en Iberoam\u00e9rica y Europa \u2013 Historieta\u2019, publicada por la Fundaci\u00f3n Academia Europea e Iberoamericana de Yuste, busca recuperar a personajes fundamentales en la historia que Extremadura comparte con Am\u00e9rica. El c\u00f3mic se convierte en medio de expresi\u00f3n amena y entretenida para hacer llegar a todo tipo de p\u00fablico estos retazos de nuestra historia. A esto se une el rigor en la construcci\u00f3n de la historia y su aspecto m\u00e1s aventurero, porque tambi\u00e9n se persigue que la lectura del c\u00f3mic lleve al lector a desear conocer m\u00e1s sobre el personaje y nuestra historia.<\/p>
