Extremadura and America”, organised by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation and the University of Extremadura (UEx), in order to present their new lines of research.

The Symposium was opened by the Academic Director of the European and Ibero-American academy of Yuste Foundation, César Chaparro; the Director of the History Department of the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature of the University of Extremadura, Enrique Moradiellos; the Treasurer of the Spanish Association of Americanists, Carlos Moreno Amador; the Director of the Area of America at the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature of the UEx, Sigfrido Vázquez and the Academic Secretary of Philosophy and Literature of the UEx, Juan Pablo Blanco Carrasco.

The Academic Director of Yuste Foundation pointed out that the second edition of this meeting “confirms the interest” of the researchers, which makes us think on future editions where we could count with the collaboration of other institutions; in fact, “conversations have already been conducted with the Spanish Association of Americanists to sign a collaboration agreement in order to sum up synergies”.

Chaparro urged the young researchers who attended the event to pick up the baton particularly “in this time of crisis where there has been a hiatus among young and senior researchers and there is a great deficit you will have to cover with your work”.

César Chaparro reminded those present that the symposium takes place in Cáceres, Trujillo and Guadalupe and affirmed that “Extremadura cannot be understood apart from its European nor its American dimension”. That is why Yuste Foundation not only has a European component, but also looks towards the American Guadalupe, which explains the location where this symposium took place.

Professor Moradiellos highlighted the relevance of this Americanist symposium and agreed with Chaparro, affirming that “America is a dimension of Extremadura. Extremadura’s history is inconceivable without looking beyond where we stand”. The Director of the History Department of the UEx finished his speech wishing the researchers present “intellectual profit and academic success”.

Professor Sigfrido Vázquez, coordinator of the symposium with César Chaparro and Carlos Moreno, emphasized the coordination of the different institutions from different areas of civil life involved in this event and highlighted the fact that the symposium began at the University and continued in Trujillo and Guadalupe because in the end “all the knowledge acquired at the University makes sense if it goes beyond its walls and reaches society”.

Carlos Amador, from the Spanish Association of Americanists pointed out that this symposium “provides coverage and visibility to young researchers as the start and development of their professional career should be enabled”.

Some of the main aims of this symposium are: to delve into the interaction that has existed between Extremadura and America for the past five centuries; to prioritize the research work that has studied this relation -a relation that has been shaping a new historical reality in both areas and is found in a cultural and material heritage in many common cases-; to make progress in studies on migratory flows between Extremadura and America and to offer a space for debate having as an essential premise the participation of young researchers in the field of American History.

This symposium is based on the lectures and presentations delivered by young researchers coming from different university and research centres from Spain, Italy, Portugal, Mexico or Peru, such as the University of Extremadura; the University of Seville; the University of País Vasco; the Complutense University of Madrid; the Autonomous University of Madrid; the University of Pablo de Olavide; the National University of Distance Education; Universitá degli Studi di Milano; Università di Urbino ‘CarloBo’/CEHR; Universida de Católica Portuguesa de Lisboa; the Dr. José María Luis Mora Research Institute; the Main National University of San Marcos in Peru; the Francisco de Vitoria University; and the Distance University of Madrid-UDIMA, among other institutions.

The symposium is conducted in collaboration with the Obra Pía de los Pizarro Foundation, the City Council of Guadalupe, Troop Nº1 Training Centre (CEFOT) and the Spanish Association of Americanists.

“ALLENDE EL MAR: EL CAMINO TRANSATLÁNTICO DE LA LITERATURA EN ESPAÑOL” (“BEYOND THE SEA: LITERATURE’S TRANSTLANTIC WAY IN SPANISH”) EXHIBITION

To complement the programme of the symposium the exhibition “Allende el mar: el camino transatlántico de la literatura en español” has been inaugurated and may be visited in the hall of the Faculty of Philosophy and Literature of the University of Extremadura. This sample, comprised of collections from the Writers’ Museum and coordinated by the Modern Art Centre of Madrid, intends to reflect the strength and capacity of the Spanish language to create bridges between the literary and editorial world of the different countries that speak it.

Besides the fact that Spanish is spoken by millions of people, it is also the official language in some twenty countries which in turn enrich it with their different social and cultural circumstances. This is the reason why, from a long time ago and due to different reasons, writers moved within these countries and thus provided their contribution, enabled mutual knowledge, created renovations and literary movements.

Part of the main publishers originated in Hispanic America where founded by Spaniards who left Spain and moved to some of the major capitals of the new continent. Spanish illustrators contributed to the editions of Buenos Aires or Mexico and American artists to those published here.

This exhibition intends to reflect the traces that show this racking that took place in different senses, through the traces and marks left by writers, editors and illustrators throughout their lives and work. Books, letters, photographs, disks, dedications, posters, drawings, personal objects and other elements serve as instruments to point out this path, this intangible but real bridge made up by the shared word, where personalities, such as Rubén Darío have travelled renewing our poetry and introducing “modernism”. Main figures from the time of Latin-American writers, during the Second Spanish Republic, such as Federico García Lorca with his successful trip to Buenos Aires in 1933 walked along it to attend the premiere of Bodas de Sangre, produced by Lola Membrives, soon after its production in Madrid, and it was crossed by the sad leave to exile by Rafael Alberti, María Teresa León, María Zambrano, Rosa Chacel, Luis Cernuda, Max Aub, León Felipe, among others.

This exhibition, curated by Raúl Manrique Girón and Claudio Pérez Miguez, may be visited until 23 November.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_post_nav admin_label=”← NAVEGACION POR NOTICIAS →” in_same_term=”on” prev_text=”VER NOTICIA ANTERIOR” next_text=”VER NOTICIA SIGUIENTE” _builder_version=”3.0.85″ custom_margin=”||3%|” /][/et_pb_column][/et_pb_row][/et_pb_section]

COMUNICACIÓN The symposium is complemented with the exhibition “Allende el mar: el camino transatlántico de la literatura en español” (“Beyond the Sea: Literature’s Transatlantic Way in Spanish”).
