The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation organises the seminar \u201cPedro Cieza de Le\u00f3n. Conquest and Evangelisation of Peru\u201d in order to analyse and place value on this polyhedral character from Llerena on the commemoration of the 5th centenary since his birth.<\/strong><\/p>\n This scientific and academic event opened this morning in Llerena, Pedro Cieza de Le\u00f3n\u2019s home town, and was attended by the General Secretary of Culture, Miriam Garc\u00eda Cabezas; the Mayor of Llerena, Valent\u00edn Cort\u00e9s, and the Academic Director of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, C\u00e9sar Chaparro.<\/p>\n The General Secretary of Culture pointed out that such initiatives place value not only on Llerena\u2019s heritage and history, but also on the \u201cstories of history\u201d and on many characters who have contributed to local and global development, such as Pedro Cieza de Le\u00f3n.<\/p>\n Garc\u00eda Cabezas stated that focusing on Cieza de Le\u00f3n \u201cis taking notice of more than just discoveries, the foundation of cities and territorial expansion; it is to take notice of characters who contributed to the knowledge of Andean people with their chronicles for global history\u201d.<\/p>\n The Head of Culture underlined that Cieza de Le\u00f3n was not the only relevant character from Llerena in American history; she also wanted to highlight the role played by those who travelled with the discoverers: the \u201cfemale conquerors of silence\u201d. She claimed that there is also another relevant figure from Llerena: Catalina de Bustamante, \u201ca teacher; a conqueror through teaching and through the spoken word\u201d and pointed out the possibility to place value on her figure as has been done with Cieza de Le\u00f3n.<\/p>\n The Academic Director of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation highlighted that one of the aims of this seminar is to bring important characters from 16th<\/sup> century Extremadura to the present and to today\u2019s reality.<\/p>\n C\u00e9sar Chaparro stated that \u201cExtremadura cannot be understood without its American dimension and the fact that we come across names that evoke characters related to America in towns and cities of Extremadura is proof of this, just as one may find names such as Trujillo or Medell\u00edn on the other side of the Atlantic\u201d.<\/p>\n He pointed out, in this sense, that \u201cthis dimension of Extremadura and Ibero-America is vital in order to understand our present reality\u201d. He added that \u201cwe shouldn\u2019t remain in the past\u201d and the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation seeks to \u201canalyse the past in order to project it to the present and the future in a peer-to-peer cooperation with other entities and other regions on each side of the Ocean, respecting both identities\u201d.<\/p>\n The Academic Director of Yuste Foundation assured that \u201cesteem and self-esteem are achieved through the knowledge of things and that knowledge of History and of certain characters helps to remove clich\u00e9s about Extremadura\u201d; that is why it is \u201cinteresting to recover lesser-known characters, such as Cieza de Le\u00f3n\u201d, a character from Llerena who rightly coined the appellation \u201cPrince of chroniclers\u201d, stated Chaparro, and added that in spite of his short life, Cieza wrote the Chronicles of Peru, which \u201chelped us to get better acquainted with the identity of the Incan Empire, as he described its geography, ethnography, the Incan dynasties, evangelisation, etc.\u201d.<\/p>\n Chaparro claimed that the speeches of the seminar would be included in a publication arranged by Yuste Foundation so that \u201call reflections and analyses made in these sessions may always redound in society\u2019s benefit\u201d.<\/p>\n Academicians and experts who study the figure and work of this chronicler of the Indies, meet in this event that takes place this Wednesday and Thursday at the Cultural Centre \u201cLa Merced\u201d. Conquista y Evangelizaci\u00f3n del Per\u00fa\u2019 con el objetivo de analizar y poner en valor la figura de este poli\u00e9drico llerenense, cuando se conmemora el quinto centenario de su nacimiento.<\/strong><\/p> Este encuentro cient\u00edfico y acad\u00e9mico se ha inaugurado esta ma\u00f1ana en Llerena, ciudad natal de Pedro Cieza de Le\u00f3n, con la presencia de la secretaria general de Cultura, Miriam Garc\u00eda Cabezas; el alcalde de Llerena, Valent\u00edn Cort\u00e9s, y el director acad\u00e9mico de la Fundaci\u00f3n Academia Europea e Iberoamericana de Yuste, C\u00e9sar Chaparro.<\/p> La secretaria general de Cultura ha se\u00f1alado que con iniciativas como este seminario se pone en valor no solo el patrimonio y la historia de Llerena, sino tambi\u00e9n las \u201chistorias de la Historia\u201d, a muchos personajes que han contribuido al desarrollo local y al desarrollo global, como Pedro Cieza de Le\u00f3n.<\/p> Garc\u00eda Cabezas ha apuntado que poner el foco en Cieza de Le\u00f3n \u201ces fijarse m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de los propios descubrimientos, de las fundaciones de ciudades y m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de la expansi\u00f3n territorial, es fijarse en figuras que contribuyeron al conocimiento del pueblo andino con sus cr\u00f3nicas para la historia global\u201d.<\/p> La responsable de Cultura ha subrayado que Cieza de Le\u00f3n no fue el \u00fanico llerenense relevante en la historia con Am\u00e9rica; tambi\u00e9n ha querido destacar el papel de quienes acompa\u00f1aron a los descubridores, a \u201clas conquistadoras del silencio\u201d, y Llerena tiene otra figura relevante, Catalina de Bustamante, \u201cuna maestra, una conquistadora a trav\u00e9s de la ense\u00f1anza y a trav\u00e9s de la palabra\u201d, y ha apuntado la idea de valorizar su figura igual que se ha hecho con Cieza de Le\u00f3n.<\/p> Por su parte, el director acad\u00e9mico de la Fundaci\u00f3n Yuste ha destacado que uno de los objetivos de este seminario es traer al presente y a la realidad de hoy personajes importantes de la Extremadura del siglo XVI.<\/p> C\u00e9sar Chaparro ha se\u00f1alado que \u201cExtremadura no se entiende sin su dimensi\u00f3n americana, y prueba de ello es que en los pueblos y ciudades extreme\u00f1as vemos nombres que nos evocan a personajes que tienen que ver con Am\u00e9rica, igual que al otro lado del Atl\u00e1ntico nos encontramos nombres como Trujillo o Medell\u00edn\u201d.<\/p> En este sentido, ha puntualizado que \u201cesa dimensi\u00f3n de Extremadura e Iberoam\u00e9rica es imprescindible para entender nuestra realidad presente\u201d.
