The Director of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, Juan Carlos Moreno, closed the course \u201cThe Redefinition of the Social Contract in Latin American-European Union Relations: Current Responses to Global Challenges\u201d, held from the 3rd to the 5th of July, at the Royal Monastery of Yuste and included in the Campus Yuste programme within the framework of the University of Extremadura\u2019s International Summer Courses.<\/p>\n
Moreno called for a \u201crenewed policy, a multilateral cooperation between Europe and Latin America\u201d and affirmed that this new relationship \u201cshould lead us towards a society that is in peace, where there is no violence, where healthcare and education are real social rights and not mere service deliveries\u201d.<\/p>\n
He pointed out, in this sense, that \u201cthe society we wish to find on both sides of the Atlantic seeks full employment, a decent salary and growth; not at any cost. Not at the expense of people and, moreover, not at the expense of the youth\u201d.<\/p>\n
He explained that in this society of multilateral cooperation, the protection of the environment is a distinctive identity sign as opposed to those who \u201crepudiate Mother Earth, withdrawing from the Paris Agreement against climate change\u201d.<\/p>\n
Moreno Pi\u00f1ero pointed out that in order to maintain the welfare state, it is necessary to be a \u201cbalancing factor in the international arena, cohesive in diversity, respectful with disagreements, integrative with disability and firm in the preservation of democracy, liberty, equality and solidarity. Strong ethical convictions are necessary to reach these achievements\u201d.<\/p>\n
Despite these statements, the Director of the Foundation has not been pessimistic about the future and shared his believe that \u201call men and women, whichever their race, creed, religion or believe, are equally deserving\u201d.<\/p>\n
Some of the speakers of this course have been: the politician, academician of Yuste and director of the course, Ram\u00f3n J\u00e1uregui; the Director General of Foreign Policy for Ibero-America, Rafaek Garranzo; the President of the European Council for Latin America and the Caribbean, Peter Van de Velde; the director of the Carolina Foundation, Jos\u00e9 Antonio Sanahuja; the director of EsGlobal, Cristina Manzano, and the adviser to the High Commissioner of the 2030 Agenda of the Spanish Government, Jorge Solana.<\/p>\n
In the like manner, the programmatic director for Latin America and the Caribbean of Intermon Oxfam, Andrea Costafreda; the President of the Interdisciplinary Institute for the Relations between the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean (IRELAC), Christian Ghymers; the director of External Relations of the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB), Mar\u00eda Salvadora Ort\u00edz, and the General Secretary of the workers\u2019 union UGT between 1994-2016, C\u00e1ndido M\u00e9ndez, also participated in the course among other speakers.<\/p>\n
The course, which brought together university students from Spain, France, Portugal, Cuba, Brazil, Costa Rica, Cape Verde, Italy, Honduras, Mexico, United Kingdom, Argentina and Chile, was organised by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation and the Carolina Foundation, in collaboration with the Ibero-American General Secretariat (SEGIB) and the University of Extremadura.<\/p>\n
