The Board of Trustees, the Academy and the staff of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation are saddened by the death, at the age of 80, of the prestigious Asturian scientist, Margarita Salas, member of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste since 2004, when she held the Isabella the Catholic Chair,<\/strong> during the Carlos V European Award ceremony, where King Juan Carlos I delivered the Award to Jorge Fernando Branco Sampaio.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The biochemist, who was a pupil of Severo Ochoa in New York during the sixties, introduced molecular genetic research in Spain. Her great discovery was the Phi29 polymerase DNA, an enzyme able to produce specific genetic copies from a single blood drop.<\/p>\n

Salas was, furthermore, a scientist committed with the role of women in research till the very end.<\/p>\n

Margarita Salas assumed charge as academician of Yuste on 13 October 2004 with sociologists Alain Touraine (France) and Zsuzsanna Sandorn\u00e9 Ferge (Hungary); the Swiss theologian, Hans Kung; the Dutch politician, Willem Frederik Duisenberg and the Polish historian, Bronislaw Geremek. The last two academicians have also passed away.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the Spanish scientist has also cooperated in two of Yuste Foundation\u2019s publications; specifically in the fourth issue of the magazine Pliegos de Yuste<\/em>, published in 2006, which dealt with \u2018The Languages of Europe\u2019 with an article entitled, \u201cMujer y conciencia: pasado, presente y futuro\u201d: www.pliegosdeyuste.eu\/n4pliegos\/margaritasalas.pdf<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 2007, Margarita Salas published the article \u201cLa difusion de virus por el mundo, una amenaza para Europa\u201d in the book, El futuro de Europa: la Europa social y de los ciudadanos<\/em>.<\/p>\n

El Patronato, la Academia y el equipo de la Fundaci\u00f3n Academia Europea e Iberoamericana de Yuste lamentan el fallecimiento, a los 80 a\u00f1os, de la prestigiosa cient\u00edfica asturiana Margarita Salas, miembro de la Academia Europea e Iberoamericana de Yuste desde el a\u00f1o 2004, cuando tom\u00f3 posesi\u00f3n del sill\u00f3n Isabel la Cat\u00f3lica durante la ceremonia de entrega del Premio Europeo Carlos V por parte del rey Juan Carlos I a Jorge Fernando Branco de Sampaio.<\/strong><\/p>

La bioqu\u00edmica, que fue disc\u00edpula de Severo Ochoa en Nueva York durante los a\u00f1os 60, introdujo la investigaci\u00f3n en gen\u00e9tica molecular en Espa\u00f1a, siendo su gran descubrimiento la ADN polimerasa Phi29, una enzima con capacidad para producir copias gen\u00e9ticas precisas a partir de una sola gota de sangre.<\/p>

Adem\u00e1s, Salas fue, hasta el final, una cient\u00edfica comprometida con el papel de las mujeres en la investigaci\u00f3n.<\/p>

Margarita Salas tom\u00f3 posesi\u00f3n como acad\u00e9mica de Yuste el d\u00eda 13 de octubre de 2004 junto con los soci\u00f3logos Alain Touraine (Francia) y Zsuzsanna Sandorn\u00e9 Ferge (Hungr\u00eda); el te\u00f3logo suizo Hans K\u00fcng; el pol\u00edtico holand\u00e9s Willem Frederik Duisenberg y el historiador polaco Bronislaw Geremek, estos dos \u00faltimos ya fallecidos.<\/p>

Por otra parte, la cient\u00edfica espa\u00f1ola tambi\u00e9n colabor\u00f3 en dos publicaciones de la Fundaci\u00f3n Yuste, concretamente en el n\u00famero 4 de la revista Pliegos de Yuste, publicada en el a\u00f1o 2006 y dedicada a \u2018Las Lenguas de Europa\u2019 con un art\u00edculo titulado: \u2018Mujer y ciencia: pasado, presente y futuro\u2019: www.pliegosdeyuste.eu\/n4pliegos\/margaritasalas.pdf<\/a>.<\/p>

En 2007 Margarita Salas public\u00f3 el art\u00edculo \u2018La difusi\u00f3n de virus por el mundo, una amenaza para Europa\u2019 en el libro \u2018El futuro de Europa: La Europa social y de los ciudadanos\u2019.<\/p>
