The President of the Regional Government of Extremadura and President of the Board of Trustees of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, Guillermo Fern\u00e1ndez Vara, has called for cohesion between European countries in the social, economic and territorial field on Monday, in order to address the challenges of the upcoming months and years. He affirmed this in statements made in the opening of the online course \u201cCohesion and Solidarity Policies in the European Union\u201d, included in the Campus Yuste programme, which is organised by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation. The Campus Yuste programme is framed within the XXI Edition of the 2020 International Summer Courses programme of the University of Extremadura.<\/p>\n

In this respect, he went on to explain that it is in the coming months that the regulations for the new multiannual financial framework have to be adopted, the regulations for the restructuring funds have to be approved and the cohesion funds need to be interpreted in an absolutely and radically different scenario from the one in which they were born many years ago, which is why it is also the moment in which we also “have to try to get the best out of ourselves, and to be able to help in everything that is in our power from each of the countries and territories “.<\/p>\n

COHESION<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Head of the Regional Executive has said that the COVID-19 pandemic is going to affect cohesion and that what is happening in Europe right now “strengthens it”, because for the first time the fact that we need to overcome it being closer together and stronger has been “taken seriously” or else “we will not overcome it”.<\/p>\n

He recalled the beginnings of the European Union, where “no one denied that it was going to be an enormously difficult project”, since there were countries from the north, south, east and west of Europe, but, both in those beginnings and as new countries were entering the European Union, there was a need for the word \u201ccohesion\u201d not to be forgotten at any time when major decisions had to be taken.<\/p>\n

Finally, Fern\u00e1ndez Vara, stressed that “these are times for scientific rigour and political consensus”, since given the current uncertainty “one can only respond with scientific sufficiency, that is, with great rigour and with a lot of commitment to recover old consensus that are absolutely essential at the moment “.<\/p>\n
