Friday, 23 October, 2020, marks the 500th anniversary of the coronation of Charles V as emperor in Aachen. On this occasion, to commemorate this event, the Cooperation Network of the Routes of Emperor Charles V is organising a series of webinars under the title “Charles V: Dreams and Nightmares of an Empire”, which will take place on 23 October, two in November and last one in December 2020 (see programme below).<\/p>\n

The presentations and reflections of specialist historians of the time will aim to present and discuss what happened in 1520 and the following years: hopes and difficulties. Special attention will be paid to the differences between official discourse, as it appears in particular in imperial propaganda and in Chancellor Gattinara’s programme for a world empire, at a time when colonial conquests showed the beginning of the globalisation process, and the actual policy to be followed. In that same year, 1520, the first circumnavigation of the Earth was taking place under the command of Fernando de Magallanes and Juan Sebasti\u00e1n Elcano, to try to find a western route to the Moluccas. This first circumnavigation was considered a great achievement in the maritime domain and had a significant impact on the European understanding of the world.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, beyond this period, we will discuss the impact of this process on European construction. It will serve to show how history and culture can be a fundamental pillar in the process of European integration. It will show some examples and good quality practices achieved by different institutions working in the field of promoting shared culture, history and memory, as well as values, \u200b\u200bsuch as democracy and human rights, or the importance of intercultural exchanges, thus contributing to a better understanding of European history, intercultural dialogue and economic development through cultural tourism.<\/p>\n
