The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation is organising the webinar “The Relation between the Religious Phenomenon and the Identity Formation of a Community, Paying Special Attention to the Historical Development of the Religious Symbol that the Virgin of Guadalupe in Mexico is\u201d, which will be held on 29 April in Guadalupe at 17:30 pm. The webinar is included in the cycle of meetings \u201cGuadalupe as a Destiny\u201d, organised by the Foundation within the programme of activities planned for the Holy Year of Guadalupe. <\/strong>(13\/04\/2021)<\/p>\n

The main presentation will be given by C\u00e9sar Chaparro G\u00f3mez, emeritus professor of Latin Philology at the University of Extremadura, who will delve into the scope of the phenomenon of Guadalupe in Mexico.<\/p>\n

According to Chaparro, the Virgin of Guadalupe \u201cis accepted by historians as the historical foundation of the construction of the Mexican nation because it exerted a triple function: to integrate and fuse cultures, to impose cultural domination and renew traditions for the present\u201d. For the emeritus professor, Our Lady of Guadalupe is the “most powerful symbol of Mexican cultural identity, above the process of secularisation of the State”.<\/p>\n

The webinar will be inaugurated by the director of Yuste Foundation, Juan Carlos Moreno Pi\u00f1ero, who will also introduce the emeritus professor.<\/p>\n

The Holy Year of Guadalupe<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 2 August 2020, the Holy Year began in Guadalupe with the opening of the Gates of Forgiveness. The Law on General State Budgets for 2021, of 30 December, granted recognition to the “Holy Year of Guadalupe 2021” as an event of exceptional public interest.<\/p>\n

The main objective of these events is to promote and energise local culture and tourism through the recovery, valuation and dissemination of cultural heritage, the promotion of religious initiatives as a way of pilgrimage and the strengthening of ties with Ibero-America.<\/p>\n

Yuste Foundation organises the Cycle of Meetings \u201cGuadalupe as a Destiny\u201d (Guadalupe Destino) with the aim of promoting dialogue on issues of public interest such as governance, science, history and culture. It organises diverse events to this end which involve the participation of personalities, academics and experts in the fields of politics, science, history and culture.<\/p>\n
