This prize is awarded by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation and it has been granted to the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Angela Merkel, in this edition.<\/strong> (13\/10\/2021)<\/p>\n<p>The Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro S\u00e1nchez; the President of the Regional Government of Extremadura, Guillermo Fern\u00e1ndez Vara; and the Carlos V European Award laureates of previous editions, Felipe Gonz\u00e1lez, Javier Solana and Marcelino Oreja, will attend the ceremony among others.<\/p>\n<p>The event will also be attended by nineteen ambassadors from European and Ibero-American countries: Andorra, Belgium, Bolivia, Chile, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Denmark, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, France, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Nicaragua, Romania, Slovak Republic; in addition to the members of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste: Juan Carlos Rodr\u00edguez Ibarra, Mar\u00eda del Carmen Iglesias Cano, M\u00f3nica Luisa Macovei and Ram\u00f3n J\u00e1uregui Atondo.<\/p>\n<p>The jury of the 14th edition of the Carlos V European Award decided to award the prize to German Chancellor Angela Merkel in &#8220;recognition of her long political career in the service of Europe, having been a strong supporter of the European integration process and of the strategic role of Europe in the international scene&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Merkel becomes the third woman to receive the Carlos V European Award after the former president of the European Parliament, Simone Veil, who received the Carlos V European Award in 2008, and the promoter of the Erasmus programme, Sofia Corradi, who received the award in 2016. It is also the second time that the award has been awarded to a Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, after Helmut Kohl in 2006.<\/p>\n<p>With this award, the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation wishes to recognise the work of those people, organisations, projects or initiatives that have contributed to the general knowledge and enhancement of Europe\u2019s cultural, social, scientific and historical values, as well as to the process of European construction and integration.<\/p>\n<p>The laureates of this award so far are: Jacques Delors (1995); Wilfried Martens (1998); Felipe Gonz\u00e1lez (2000); Mija\u00edl Gorbachov (2002); Jorge Sampaio (2004); Helmut Kohl (2006); Simone Veil (2008); Javier Solana (2011); Jos\u00e9 Manuel Dur\u00e3o Barroso (2014); Sofia Corradi (2016); Marcelino Oreja Aguirre (2017); Antonio Tajani (2018) and the \u201cCultural Routes of the Council of Europe\u201d project (2019).<\/p>\n<p>Carlos V European Award Research and Mobility Grants for European Studies<\/p>\n<p>Along with the Carlos V European Award, Yuste Foundation launches ten Research and Mobility Grants for European Studies addressed to researchers from all over Europe who are working on a doctoral thesis in any discipline of the human and social sciences.<\/p>\n<p>The Carlos V European Award Grants deal with history, memory and European integration, in accordance with the topic chosen by the laureate in each edition and from a multidisciplinary perspective.<\/p>\n<p>To date, 100 researchers from across the European Union and from countries such as Russia, Morocco, Mexico, Peru, Brazil and Cuba have benefited from these grants.<\/p>\n<p>The selected researchers join the Yuste Alumni Euro-Ibero-American Network which aims to facilitate the exchange of projects and information among researchers specialising in European issues who have obtained one of the Carlos V European Award Grants.<\/p>\n<p>The Yuste Alumni Network is spread across the world\u2019s leading universities and research centres.
