The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation organises the conference \u201cThe Importance of the Spanish Constitution in its 43rd<\/sup> Anniversary, with Special Reference to the Work of the Constitutional Court\u201d on Friday, 10 December, at 19:00, at San Jos\u00e9 School in Villafranca de los Barros, which will be given by the President Emeritus of the Constitutional Court, Juan Jos\u00e9 Gonz\u00e1lez Rivas<\/strong>. <\/strong>(7\/12\/2021)<\/p>\n

This talk, organised with the collaboration of the City Council of Villafranca de los Barros and San Jos\u00e9 School in that town, is part of Tribuna EuroIberoamerica, a programme set up by Yuste Foundation, which takes place in different parts of Extremadura and counts with experts from various social, economic and cultural fields, among others.<\/p>\n

During his conference, the president emeritus of the Constitutional Court will substantially analyse the important work carried out by the fathers of the Costitution during the Spanish Transition, underlining the importance of concord, as a value appreciated at that historical moment, and the need for its projection in today\u2019s society.<\/p>\n

He will also address the essential content of the Magna Carta of 1978, distinguishing between two substantive aspects: fundamental rights and fundamental freedoms and the organisation of State powers.<\/p>\n

Finally, he will explain the essential role of the Constitutional Court as the supreme and authentic interpreter of the Constitution, referring to the jurisprudential development of these 42 years of validity.<\/p>\n

JUAN JOS\u00c9 GONZ\u00c1LEZ RIVAS, PRESIDENT EMERITUS OF THE SPANISH CONSTITUTIONAL COURT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Juan Jos\u00e9 Gonz\u00e1lez Rivas (\u00c1vila, 1951) holds an excellentcum laude PhD in law from the Complutense University of Madrid since 1981 for his thesis \u201cLa Justicia Constitucional: Derecho Comparado y Espa\u00f1ol\u201d.<\/p>\n

When he was 24 years old, he entered the judicial career via competitive public examination, where he has earned the professional titles of judge of First Instance (1975-1981), magistrate (1981), and judge via competitive public examination of the contentious-administrative (n\u00ba 1 of his promotion) from 1982 to 1992. He has presided over the Fourth Chamber for Contentious-Administrative Matters of the Territorial Court of Madrid (1987-1992).<\/p>\n

Judge of the Supreme Court since 1997, since 2005 he has been President of the Seventh Section of the Third Chamber of the Supreme Court. Since 2012 he has been a judge of the Constitutional Court, appointed on the proposal of the Congress of Deputies and by Royal Decree 281\/2017, of 22 March, he was appointed president of the Constitutional Court, a position he has held until 17 November 2021.<\/p>\n

Among other professional qualifications, he holds the titles of lawyer of the Ministry of Justice: on secondment; lawyer of the General Council of the Judiciary: on leave and career lawyer of the Constitutional Court on leave. He was Under Secretary General in 1986 and is number two in the ranks of the Constitutional Court\u2019s Legal Service.<\/p>\n

In the field of teaching, he has been professor of Constitutional Law in the Faculty of Law of the Complutense University of Madrid, in the University Foundation San Pablo CEU, in the Judicial School; Professor of Public Law (Administrative and Constitutional) at the School of Legal Practice of the University of Comillas (ICAI-ICADE), at the Faculty of Law of that University and at the School of Legal Practice of the Complutense University of Madrid.<\/p>\n

He has published legal books on Constitutional, Administrative Law and Contentious-Administrative Jurisdiction and more than a hundred doctrinal and jurisprudential studies in legal journals. He has also given a number of legal lectures on subjects especially dealing with public law and has been a speaker at various training courses of the General Council of the Judiciary.<\/p>\n

Former Costa Rican Minister, Juan Manuel Villasuso; former Ibero-American Secretary General and Prince of Asturias Award, Enrique V. Iglesias; former President of the European Parliament, Enrique Bar\u00f3n; former European Commission economic adviser and IRELAC President, Christian Ghymers; journalist Anna Bosch; filmmaker Santi Amodeo, and the writer, Jes\u00fas S\u00e1nchez Adalid, participated in this programme, among others.<\/p>\n
