Yuste Foundation has organised the 1st<\/sup> Symposium \u201cCharles V and America. Ethics in the Hispanic Occupation of the Indies and in the Indigenous Integration during the Carolinian Period\u201d along with the Research Group Extremadura and America (Extrem@m\u00e9rica). The event will be held on 24 and 25 November in the assembly hall of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters (the campus in C\u00e1ceres) of the University of Extremadura.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/strong>(18\/11\/2022)<\/p>\n

The intention with this 1st<\/sup> symposium is to delve into the analysis and reflection on the emperor\u2019s action in the Indian territories that were joining the Catholic Monarchy. The topic of this 1st<\/sup> symposium has to do with the so-called Indian polemic concerning the legitimacy of the occupation and the legality of the subjugation of the indigenous population during the Carolinian period.<\/p>\n

The work of the participants in this meeting raises the ethical values that Charles V tried to imbue in Indian praxis, which partly stemmed from the pressure of religious men, jurists or other intellectuals of Christian humanism (highlighting the School of Salamanca), which defended new channels and postulates in Hispanic action in the New World. These values are manifested in the legislation governing the Indians, in the methods of evangelisation, in the learning and respect of indigenous languages, in acculturation, in artistic manifestations, in the miscegenation and integration or in the settlements and spatial planning.<\/p>\n

The scientific committee of the symposium is made up by professors and historians from different Spanish and American universities. It is directed by professors Sixto S\u00e1nchez-Lauro, historian of Law and Institutions and professor of postgraduate studies at the University of Buenos Aires, and Francisco Javier Pizarro G\u00f3mez, professor of History of Ibero-American Art at the University of Extremadura and director of the Cuerpo Superior para el Estudio de Cultura Novohispana <\/em>of the Popular Autonomous University of the State of Puebla in Mexico. \u00a0<\/p>\n

The 1st<\/sup> Symposium \u201cCarlos V and America. Ethics in the Hispanic Occupation of the Indies and in the Indigenous Integration during the Carolinian Period\u201d counts with the collaboration of the Faculties of Law and Philosophy and Letters of the University of Extremadura; The Real Academia de Extremadura de las Letras y las Artes<\/em>; the Real Academia de Jurisprudencia y Legislaci\u00f3n de Extremadura<\/em>; the city council of C\u00e1ceres; the Provincial Council of C\u00e1ceres and the Route of Charles V, which is a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe.<\/p>\n
