The doctoral thesis \u201cRevoluci\u00f3n e indulgencia. La pol\u00edtica de indultos en la \u00faltima Nueva Espa\u00f1a, 1808-1821\u201d, written by the Mexican researcher \u00d3scar Z\u00e1rate Miramontes, won the 7th<\/sup> Research Prize to Ibero-American Doctoral Theses that is granted by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation. <\/strong>(22\/03\/2023)<\/p>\n

The prize was presented in the framework of the 3rd<\/sup> International Congress on \u201cRelations between Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe: Images and Views on Both Shores\u201d, which has been held on the 21st<\/sup> and 22nd<\/sup> of March at the Royal Monastery of Santa Maria de Guadalupe (C\u00e1ceres). The prize consists of the publication of the thesis in the Foundation\u2019s book collection known as \u201cTesis Doctorales\u201d and is endowed with \u20ac3,000.<\/p>\n

To Dr. Z\u00e1rate Miramontes, this award is a recognition of the effort involved in doing historical research, as well as a great motivation to continue working. \u201cThis award is a double recognition because it is given in the framework of a congress that favours relations between Latin America, Europe and Spain\u201d, he claimed. In this sense, Dr. Z\u00e1rate pointed out that recognising works that rescue the historical perspective between both regions is important because \u201cit contributes to give continuity to the good bonds of solidarity, friendship and brotherhood between both parts of the world\u201d.<\/p>\n

The thesis \u201cRevoluci\u00f3n e indulgencia. La pol\u00edtica de indultos en la \u00faltima Nueva Espa\u00f1a, 1808-1821\u201d studies the uses of pardons or criminal waivers in New Spain during the process of political crisis, civil war and imperial disintegration that, as a consequence, led to the independence of these northern provinces of Hispanic America.<\/p>\n

The circumstantial part of the research work focuses on examining the pardons that the governments of the viceroyalty of New Spain decreed during their last thirteen years of existence and on determining the reasons and the specific purposes of their concession, as well as their political implications in the troubled circumstances of the kingdom. In that sense, the thesis identifies two main functions in the uses of pardon in that period: legitimising and pacifying.<\/p>\n

\u00d3scar Sergio Z\u00e1rate Miramontes holds a PhD in History from the Colegio de M\u00e9xico (College of Mexico). He has participated in numerous courses and seminars in Spain, France and the United States and received various awards in Mexico and Spain. He has also received scholarships from the National Council of Science and Technology, the Ibero-American General Secretariat and the Centre for the Study of Mexican History.<\/p>\n

The jury of the 7th<\/sup> Research Prize to Ibero-American Doctoral Theses was made up by doctors Juan Carlos Moreno Pi\u00f1ero, the director of Yuste Foundation and president of the jury, Rosa Mar\u00eda Perales Piqueres, Elena Jurado Mangas, Sigfrido V\u00e1zquez Cienfuegos and Gabriel Moreno Gonz\u00e1lez.<\/p>\n

In this 7th<\/sup> edition, the following research works were finalists: \u201cA Rep\u00fablica de Monroe versus o Imp\u00e9rio de Pedro I: Uma perspetiva hist\u00f3rica sobre o pragmatismo americano\u201d, by Leon\u00eddio Paulo Martins Ferreira; \u201cTraducci\u00f3n y recepci\u00f3n de la literatura brasile\u00f1a en Espa\u00f1a entre 1855 y 1936\u201d, by Francielle Piuco Biglia; \u201cLa identidad cultural como patrimonio vivo en los inmigrantes polacos, ucranianos, rusobielorrusos y alemanes de Misiones\u201d, by Zulma M\u00f3nica Pittau Sevilla, and \u201cGentias da terra: g\u00eanero e etnia no Rio de Janeiro colonial\u201d, by Suelen Sequeira Julio.<\/p>\n
