Economy and International Conflicts” along with the city council of Guadalupe and the Franciscan Community. The event will take place at the Royal Monastery of Guadalupe on April 10th. (3/04/2024)

One of the objectives of this congress is to continue deepening the interaction that has been taking place between America and Europe over five centuries. Likewise, it aims to prioritise research that studies this relationship, which has been shaping a historical reality in both spaces, evidenced by a cultural and material heritage that is, in many cases, common.

ECONOMIC CRISIS AND INTERNATIONAL CONFLICTS

In this edition, the congress focuses on the analysis and debate about the international conflicts that are straining geopolitics and international relations, and which influence the world economy, which is in a more turbulent situation in this context.

The opening presentation is entitled “Ibero-America and Spain, a Shared History”, and will be given by the president of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation of Spain, Manuel Pizarro Moreno. Following this, a roundtable discussion on the economic crisis and the current situation in the bi-regional space has been scheduled, with participation from Tomás Gómez Franco, professor of Economics at the Francisco de Vitoria University; Baudilio Tomé Muguruza, Tax Inspector and State Auditor, expert in International Law and Taxation; Marta Villar Ezcurra, professor of Financial and Tax Law (USP-CEU) and member of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation of Spain; and Carla Ledezma Castro, director and researcher of the Interdisciplinary Network for Global Justice and American Integration (RIJIA).

Another roundtable will address clashes and conflicting interests in the Europe-Latin America space in international conflicts, with the participation of Francisco Oda-Ángel, director of the Cervantes Institute in Tetouan (Morocco); José Alberto Azeredo Lopez, professor of International Law at the Catholic University of Portugal (Porto); Ignacio Perotti Pinciroli, professor of International Law and director of the Master’s Degree in Human Rights at the European University of Madrid; and María Dolores Algora Weber, senior researcher at the Centre for International Security at Francisco de Victoria University.

International conflicts will also be analysed from a journalistic perspective by former RTVE correspondent in the Middle East, Mexico, and Central America, Javier Gutiérrez, who will give a lecture entitled “Ukraine-Gaza: Two Conflicts with Global Repercussions”.

The conference programme is completed by “Death in the Snow: Pedro de Alvarado and the Conquest of the Andes”, which will be offered by George Lovell, Geography professor at Queen’s University (Canada) and visiting professor at Pablo de Olavide University in Seville.

YOUNG RESEARCHERS

One of the pillars of this congress is based on research and aims to enhance the debate between the two regions, promoting, above all, the participation of young researchers in the fields of International Relations and the History of Ibero-America as a space of deep relations between the two regions.

In this edition, 19 papers have been received from Spain, the Philippines, Ecuador, and Canada, 12 of which will be presented by their authors during the Congress, and the rest will be published on Yuste Foundation’s YouTube channel for consultation.

RESEARCH PRIZE TO IBERO-AMERICAN DOCTORAL THESES

In addition to the lectures and papers, the congress is the framework chosen by Yuste Foundation to award the Research Prize to Ibero-American Doctoral Theses, which was awarded to the Cuban researcher Alain J. Santos Fuentes in this edition for his work La Constitución de Cádiz y la modernidad política en Cuba: actores, prácticas y conceptos (1810-1823).

THE SCHOOL OF GUADALUPE

This congress is part of the School of Guadalupe, a programme that was launched by Yuste Foundation in order to foster reflection and research on History, Law, and International Relations. Among its aims is to contribute to academic, social, and intellectual development in the region and to provide the Ibero-American society with tools that are useful for socio-economic progress, based on the historical relationships between Ibero-American countries, the current state of links, and the search for a common future.

Those interested can register free of charge via the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfvFUAGfRgDl5JS70GFkLL_1WFDi_7qertlfv0ezPUx9U6gcQ/viewform and Yuste Foundation will issue them a certificate of attendance.
