<\/a>In order to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal, the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation organised the course \u201cPortugal, 1974: Society, Culture, and Literature in the Carnation Revolution\u201d, along with the University of \u00c9vora. The course will be held from the 2nd to the 4th of July at the Monastery of San Jer\u00f3nimo de Yuste. It is part of the Campus Yuste training programme, which is framed within the 25th International Summer\/Autumn Courses of the University of Extremadura.<\/strong> (1\/07\/2024).<\/p>\nThe Carnation Revolution triggered profound democratic transformations in Portugal and helped consolidate the country\u2019s progress within a broader context following its accession to the European Economic Community, now the European Union, in 1986. This event was significant not only for Portugal but also for Spain, which was still under Franco\u2019s dictatorship at the time.<\/p>\n
Over the course of three days, key experts in that era will analyse the democratic changes that emerged as a result of the Carnation Revolution and their impact on culture, literature, and communication, among other areas. From that moment on, the country began to open up to the world after several decades of dictatorship under the Estado Novo regime.<\/p>\n
Some of these key figures include Carlos Reis, emeritus professor at the University of Coimbra; Pilar del R\u00edo, president of the Saramago Foundation; Encarna Lemus, professor of Contemporary History at the University of Huelva and National History Award winner; Fernando Martins, professor of Contemporary History at the University of \u00c9vora, along with other professors and experts.<\/p>\n
The course will be attended by university students from Spain, Peru, Portugal, Mexico, Ecuador, China, and Turkey. They are currently studying at the following universities: Complutense University of Madrid, Norbert Wiener Private University (Peru), University of \u00c9vora (Portugal), University of Salamanca, Carlos III University, University of Porto (Portugal), University of Extremadura, National Autonomous University of Mexico, Central University of Ecuador, Rey Juan Carlos University, Pablo de Olavide University, and Mimar Sinan University (Turkey).<\/p>\n
The opening will feature speeches by the ambassador of Portugal to Spain, Jo\u00e3o Mira Gomes; the ambassador of Spain to Portugal, Juan Fern\u00e1ndez Trigo; the Ppresident of the Portuguese Academy of History and member of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste, Manuela Mendon\u00e7a; the vice-rector for Education and Pedagogical Innovation, Ana Paula Canavarro from the University of \u00c9vora; and the vice-rector for University Extension at the University of Extremadura, Mar\u00eda Teresa Terr\u00f3n Reynolds.<\/p>\n
The course is directed by Antonio S\u00e1ez Delgado, professor of Iberian Literatures at the University of \u00c9vora and director of the chair of Iberian Studies, and Enrique Moradiellos, professor of Contemporary History at the University of Extremadura and member of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste.<\/p>\n
