On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Accession of Spain and Portugal to the European Economic Community, Enrique Barrasa S\u00e1nchez, Director of the European Academy of Yuste Foundation and Director-General for External Action, emphasized that the Royal Monastery of Yuste, the headquarters of the Foundation, is \u201cone of the emblematic sites of the European Union\u201d and should therefore be \u201ca source of pride for all the people of Extremadura\u201d.<\/p>\n

Barrasa pointed out the \u201cpolitical and historic symbolism\u201d of Extremadura in that the Emperor Charles V decided to retire to Yuste, comparing this with what he meant for Europe.<\/p>\n

Moreover, the Director of the Foundation explained that Yuste directly combines \u201cthe pro-European vocation of Extremadura and Spain\u201d and stated that Extremadurans \u201cfeel proud that much of the history of Europe, determined by what the Emperor decided at that time, is located in Extremadura\u201d.<\/p>\n

Finally, Enrique Barrasa explained that the Royal Monastery of Yuste is a point of reference for all the citizens of Extremadura, \u201cfrom the point of view of being open to Europe, which means being open to the world\u201d.<\/p>\n
