He took possession of his Chair in 1998 along with four other prominent intellectuals and scientists.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"shafferyuste2004\"The English playwright Peter Shaffer, a member of the European Academy of Yuste, passed away on Monday at the age of 90 after a short illness. Shaffer had been a member of the European Academy of Yuste since 1998 when he took over the Cervantes Chair during the ceremony of the Carlos V European Award, which was attended by the Prime Minister of Belgium, Wilfried Martens.<\/p>\n

The English playwright was appointed scholar along with four other prominent intellectuals and scientists; the Portuguese writer Jose Saramago, the Italian semiotician and writer Umberto Eco, and the Nobel laureates in Economics and Physics Reinhard Selten, from Germany, and Heinrich Rohrer, from Switzerland. The painter Antonio L\u00f3pez, who was also appointed scholar at that time, could not attend as he was ill, but he did so in a later call. The Chairs of these first scholars bear the name of illustrious characters: Columbus, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Rembrandt, Plato and Cicero.<\/p>\n

Peter Shaffer attended the investiture as scholar of the European Academy of Yuste and he also participated in the meeting of the Academy held in 2004 in which the Declaration \u201cEurope and the issue of ageing\u201d<\/a> was approved.<\/p>\n

In addition, Shaffer, like other scholars of Yuste, was part of the Advisory Board of the journal \u201cPliegos de Yuste\u201d published by the European Academy of Yuste Foundation.<\/p>\n

The Board, Members of the Academy and the entire team of the European Academy of Yuste Foundation feels very deeply such a loss to the European culture of a great person, an intellectual, a thinker and a convinced Europeanist, united in the pain felt not only by his family but by all of those who knew him and who have read him.<\/p>\n
