The European Academy of Yuste Foundation in collaboration with National Heritage have organised the Music for Charles V and his children concert on Saturday, 18 June at 13.00 hours at the Royal Monastery of Yuste. The hearing, which is part of the cycle \u2018The Emperor\u2019s Concerts\u2019 will be performed by the choir Zenobia Scholars and directed by the English master Rupert Darmerell.<\/p>\n
\u2018Music for Charles V and his children\u2019 is the title of the concert that integrates music of the masters of Spanish Renaissance polyphony played by a young Spanish choir specialising in this demanding repertoire. The programme starts with the song Mil pesares por abandonaros (A thousand regrets for abandoning you) of the Franco-Flemish master Josquin des Prez, who became well known in Europe in his time and which was the favourite of Caesar Carlos. Songs by Tom\u00e1s Luis de Victoria (1548-1611) and Alonso Lobo (1555-1617) were also sung. The concert was free and open to all citizens until seating capacity was reached.<\/p>\n
ZENOBIA SCHOLARS
\nThe chamber choir was created to train young singers who are interested in Renaissance music. In 2015 they travelled to the United Kingdom and Rome, participating in the Cambridge Summer Music Festival and in the Rome Baroque Festival, offering other performances in London and in Rome, at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music, St. Peter\u2019s Basilica and the Embassy of Spain before the Holy See. In 2015 and 2016 they participated in the educational programme of the Royal Theatre, offering a total of five concerts. In July 2016 they will travel to London again, invited by the group The Sixteen to participate in the Sounds Sublime Festival, which brings together the best young English choirs, this being the first time a non-English choir participates. As part of this Festival, they will offer two concerts at the National Gallery and at the Church of St. Martin in the Fields. In the summer of 2016 they will work again with David Skinner, with the Alamire ensemble, with Peter Phillips and with signers of the Tallis Scholars.<\/p>\n
RUPERT DAMERELL
\nHe is a Musicology graduate by the University of Cambridge and an organist at the Royal College of Organists in London. His great musical versatility stems from his studies, covering various fields and instruments such as singing, choir conducting, piano and violin. He attended them, among others, with Emma Kirkby, Evelyn Tubb, Stephen Cleobury, Peter Phillips and Paul Goodwin. He is director of the choir of the EOI (School of Industrial Organisation), Zenobia Consort and Zenobia Scholars, as well as of Escolan\u00eda and the Choir of parents of the Sagrado Coraz\u00f3n de Chamart\u00edn College. As director of Zenobia M\u00fasica, he develops an important pedagogical work with teachers such as David Skinner, Stephen Cleobury and Peter Phillips, organising courses and seminars and the Music Festival of Las Navas del Marqu\u00e9s, which attracts to this town of \u00c1vila hundreds of fans and the best national and international groups of ancient music every summer.<\/p>\n
EMPEROR’S CONCERTS
\nThe Foundation and National Heritage will organise the next concert on 25 September which will be played by the baroque music group ‘La Folia’. The opening of this series of concerts took place on 22 April with a tribute to Miguel de Cervantes, played by the Amadeus Choir from Puebla de la Calzada (Badajoz) and directed by Alonso G\u00f3mez Gallego. This concert is part of the programme of activities of the Fourth Centenary of the death of Cervantes of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport.<\/p>\n
In 1997 the European Academy of Yuste Foundation started a series of concerts with the purpose of \u201cestablishing in Extremadura a musical cycle related to the time of Charles V\u201d, claiming in this way the European cultural heritage and its history as the main driver of the construction process and European integration.<\/p>\n
During these years more than forty concerts have been held, most of them in the church of the Royal Monastery of Yuste; others in C\u00e1ceres, Plasencia, Jarandilla de la Vera, Badajoz and Trujillo. Outside Spain there have been auditions in Lisbon, Brussels, Ghent, Ranst, Beveren and Mechelen, all achieving great public success.<\/p>\n
