{"id":9246,"date":"2016-07-06T11:26:19","date_gmt":"2016-07-06T11:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.fundacionyuste.org\/?p=9246"},"modified":"2016-12-12T10:21:18","modified_gmt":"2016-12-12T10:21:18","slug":"director-general-of-foreign-action-outlines-how-spain-and-portugals-entry-to-the-european-union-signalled-the-start-of-cooperation-between-the-two-countries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.fundacionyuste.org\/en\/director-general-of-foreign-action-outlines-how-spain-and-portugals-entry-to-the-european-union-signalled-the-start-of-cooperation-between-the-two-countries\/","title":{"rendered":"Director General of Foreign Action outlines how Spain and Portugal\u2019s entry to the European Union signalled the start of cooperation between the two countries"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9050 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionyuste.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/DSC_0283-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Foto de Familia\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.fundacionyuste.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/DSC_0283-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.fundacionyuste.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/DSC_0283-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.fundacionyuste.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/DSC_0283.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.fundacionyuste.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/DSC_0283-133x88.jpg 133w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Rosa Balas Torres, Chief Executive of External Action and President of the European Academy of Yuste Foundation\u2019s Executive Committee today opened the course entitled:\u00a0 \u2018The European integration process: 30 years of European Union in Spain and Portugal (1986-2016)\u2019 taking place until Friday at the Royal Monastery of Yuste, the Foundation&#8217;s headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>During her opening speech, Balas Torres gave her praise for the good relationship between Entremadura and Portugal for the last 30 years, describing the \u201ccooperation that didn\u2019t exist before because the countries were pursuing different strategic goals\u201d.\u00a0 She went on to discuss how 30 years of European Union in Spain and Portugal gave rise to \u201cpolitical, social, and economic convergence\u201d, changing the political landscape of both our countries.<\/p>\n<p>The Director General added that for the border regions, Extremadura, Alentejo, and Centro, the membership of both countries started a \u201cpath of progress\u201d by looking to the future together.<\/p>\n<p>25 years ago, along with the creation of the INETERREG programme &#8211; started up to \u201cbreak down borders\u201d &#8211; Extremadura opted firmly for cooperation with Portugal. More specifically, to work together with the border regions of Alentejo and Centro, forming the European region Euroace in 2009 with the goal of continuing to \u201cdeepen knowledge and cooperation from an economic, social, and cultural perspective\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>From Rosa Balas\u2019 perspective, Spain\u2019s entry to the European Union was not straightforward. She went on to outline how we made great contributions to the European project such as the concept of \u2018\u201dEuropean citizenship\u201d and \u201ccohesion policies\u201d as well as the two languages spoken by over 500 million people allowing them to share the \u201cIbero-American and African view\u201d; the outcome of historic relationships.<\/p>\n<p>During the opening session the University\u2019s Vice-Chancellor, Maribel L\u00f3pez also spoke, pointing out that \u201ceducation and training are essential to European policies\u201d.
