Franz Leopold Maria M\u00f6st naci\u00f3 en Linz, Austria y estudi\u00f3 bajo la direcci\u00f3n del compositor Baldiuim Sulzer. Durante su juventud en Linz, estudi\u00f3 viol\u00edn, y desarroll\u00f3 bastante inter\u00e9s por la direcci\u00f3n. Despu\u00e9s de resultar herido en un accidente de coche que le produjo problemas nerviosos, dej\u00f3 sus estudios de viol\u00edn y se dedic\u00f3 por completo a los estudios de direcci\u00f3n.<\/p>

Su debut se produjo en el Festival de Salzburgo en 1985, y despu\u00e9s con la Orquesta Filarm\u00f3nica de Londres en 1986. Durante los primeros cinco a\u00f1os de su carrera realiz\u00f3 colaboraciones como director invitado en diferentes orquestas: su debut americano con la Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica de Saint Louis en 1989, actuaciones con las orquestas de Atlanta, Boston, Nueva York, Chicago, adem\u00e1s de frecuentes actuaciones con la Filarm\u00f3nica de Londres. En 1990 se convirti\u00f3 en director principal de la Orquesta Filarm\u00f3nica de Londres (LPO por sus siglas en ingl\u00e9s).<\/p>

De 1995 a 2000, fue director musical de la \u00d3pera de Zurich. Mientras estuvo all\u00ed, condujo 27 nuevas obras as\u00ed como numerosas reposiciones. Sus mayores \u00e9xitos incluyen el ciclo de El Anillo de los Nibelungos. Se convirti\u00f3 en director general de la \u00d3pera de Zurich en septiembre de 2005, y dej\u00f3 el puesto en julio de 2008.<\/p>

Welter-M\u00f6st se convirti\u00f3 en director de la Orquesta de Cleveland en la temporada 2002-2003, con un contrato inicial de 5 a\u00f1os. Al final de su primera temporada se ampli\u00f3 su contrato por 5 a\u00f1os m\u00e1s. En junio de 2008, la orquesta anunci\u00f3 otra ampliaci\u00f3n del contrato hasta la temporada 2017-2018.<\/p>

Welser-M\u00f6st dirige en algunos de los centros de m\u00fasica m\u00e1s conocidos del mundo, como Berl\u00edn, Tokyo, Par\u00eds, Salzburgo, Londres y en Estados Unidos. Trabaja entre otras con las Orquestas Filarm\u00f3nicas de Viena y Berl\u00edn, la Orquesta Sinf\u00f3nica de Radio Bavaria, la Orquesta Concertgebouw de \u00c1msterdam e importantes orquestas de Estados Unidos y Escandinavia.<\/p>

El 6 de junio de 2007, el gobierno austriaco anunci\u00f3 el nombramiento de Welter-M\u00f6st como director musical (Generalmusikdirektor) de la \u00d3pera Estatal de Viena, empezando en septiembre de 2010, junto con Dominique Meyer como director (Staatsoperndirektor). M\u00f6st debut\u00f3 en la Staatsoper en 1987, con L\u2019italiana in Algeri de Rossini. Sin embargo le llev\u00f3 m\u00e1s de 10 a\u00f1os volver a la \u00d3pera Estatal para dirigir Trist\u00e1n e Isolda de Richard Wagner. En diciembre de 2006 condujo su primer estreno en Viena, Arabella, de Richard Strauss. Tambi\u00e9n dirigi\u00f3 el Ciclo del Anillo de Wagner y Le nozze di Figaro de Mozart.<\/p>

Franz Welser-M\u00f6st dirigir\u00e1 a la Filarm\u00f3nica de Viena en el Concierto de A\u00f1o Nuevo de 2010\/2011.<\/p>
