Doctor en Farmacia por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid (1958), en 1963 fue Catedr\u00e1tico de Bioqu\u00edmica de la Facultad de Farmacia de la Universidad de Granada y en 1968 lleg\u00f3 a ser Rector de esta instituci\u00f3n, cargo que desempe\u00f1\u00f3 hasta 1972. Al a\u00f1o siguiente fue nombrado catedr\u00e1tico de su especialidad en la Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Madrid.<\/p> [\/et_pb_text][\/et_pb_column][\/et_pb_row][et_pb_row][et_pb_column type=\"1_3\"][\/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=\"2_3\"][et_pb_accordion admin_label=\"CONTENIDO DESPLEGABLE\"][et_pb_accordion_item title=\"M\u00c1S INFORMACI\u00d3N\"]<\/p> Cofundador en 1974 del Centro de Biolog\u00eda Molecular Severo Ochoa, de la Universidad Aut\u00f3noma de Madrid y del Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Cient\u00edficas. Entre otras responsabilidades pol\u00edticas, el Profesor Mayor ha desempe\u00f1ado los cargos de Subsecretario de Educaci\u00f3n y Ciencia del Gobierno espa\u00f1ol (1974-75), Diputado al Parlamento Espa\u00f1ol (1977-78), Consejero del Presidente del Gobierno (1977-78), Ministro de Educaci\u00f3n y Ciencia (1981-82) y Diputado al Parlamento Europeo (1987). En 1978 pas\u00f3 a ocupar el cargo de Director General Adjunto de la UNESCO y, en 1987, fue elegido Director General de dicha Organizaci\u00f3n, siendo reelegido en 1993 para un segundo mandato. En 1999, decide no presentarse a un tercer mandato y, a su regreso a Espa\u00f1a, crea la Fundaci\u00f3n para una Cultura de Paz, de la que es Presidente.<\/p> A lo largo de los doce a\u00f1os que estuvo al frente de la UNESCO (1987-1999) el Profesor Mayor Zaragoza dio un nuevo impulso a la misi\u00f3n de la Organizaci\u00f3n \u2013\u201cconstruir los baluartes de la paza en la mente de los hombres\u201d-, al convertirla en una instituci\u00f3n al servicio de la paz, la tolerancia, los derechos humanos y la convivencia pac\u00edfica, mendiante el trabajo en sus \u00e1mbitos de competencia y siempre fiel a su cometido original. Siguiendo las orientaciones del Profesor Mayor, la UNESCO cre\u00f3 el Programa Cultura de Paz, cuyo trabajo se organiz\u00f3 en cuatro vertientes principales: la educaci\u00f3n para la paz, los derechos humanos y la democracia, la lucha contra la exclusi\u00f3n y la pobreza, la defensa del pluralismo cultural y di\u00e1logo intercultural y la prevenci\u00f3n de conflictos y consolidaci\u00f3n de la paz.<\/p> En el marco de esta estrategia, se celebraron numerosas reuniones y conferencias internacionales sobre educaci\u00f3n para la no violencia, erradicaci\u00f3n de la discriminaci\u00f3n y fomento del pluralismo y la cooperaci\u00f3n internacional. Resultado de todas estas reuniones fue el importante n\u00famero de Declaraciones \u2013una treintena- en las que se expresa la voluntad de fomentar la educaci\u00f3n, la ciencia, la cultura, la invetigaci\u00f3n o la docencia, as\u00ed como la justicia y la \u201csolidaridad intelectual y moral\u201d, a las que se refiere la Constituci\u00f3n de la UNESCO. El 13 de septiembre de 1999, la Asamblea General de la ONU aprob\u00f3 la Declaraci\u00f3n y Plan de Acci\u00f3n sobre una Cultura de Paz, que constituye, desde el punto de vista conceptual y pr\u00e1ctico, la m\u00e1xima aspiraci\u00f3n del Prof. Mayor Zaragoza.<\/p> Con la Fundaci\u00f3n para una Cultura de Paz, constituida en Madrid en marzo de 2000, el Prof. Mayor contin\u00faa la labor emprendida como Director General de la UNESCO de impulsar en todos los \u00e1mbitos del quehacer humano, el tr\u00e1nsito de una cultura de violencia e imposici\u00f3n a una cultura de paz y tolerancia. Se ocupa principalmente de contenidos educativos, or\u00edgenes de los conflictos, democracia y derechos humanos. En diciembre de 2000 organiz\u00f3 un Encuentro Internacional, al que asistieron grandes personalidades que han destacado en la lucha por la justicia, la libertad y la paz. Al t\u00e9rmino de dicho encuentro, se aprob\u00f3 por unanimidad la Declaraci\u00f3n de Madrid. 2001 \u2013 presente Presidente del Comit\u00e9 \u201cScience and Society\u201d de la FEBS y miembro de su Consejo Ejecutivo. 2002 - 2003 Presidente del European Research Council Expert Group (ERCEG). 2005 \u2013 2006 Co-presidente del Grupo de Alto Nivel para la Alianza de Civilizaciones, designado por el Secretario General de las Naciones Unidas. 2007 \u2013 presente Presidente de \u201cInitiative for Science in Europe\u201d (ISE).<\/p> Adem\u00e1s de numerosas publicaciones cient\u00edficas, el Profesor Federico Mayor ha publicado cuatro poemarios, A contraviento (1985), Aguafuertes (1991), El fuego y la esperanza (1996) y Terral (1997) y varios libros de ensayos: Un mundo nuevo (en ingl\u00e9s The World Ahead: Our Future in the Making) (1999), Los nudos gordianos (1999), Ma\u00f1ana siempre es tarde (1987), La nueva p\u00e1gina (1994), Memoria del futuro (1994), La paix demain?
