Peter Piot<\/h2>

\u00a0Sill\u00f3n S\u00f3crates <\/strong><\/p>

Director Ejecutivo del ONUSIDA desde su creaci\u00f3n en 1995 y Secretario General Adjunto de las Naciones Unidas, el Dr Peter Piot procede del mundo acad\u00e9mico y cient\u00edfico, donde ha realizado una destacada carrera centrada en el SIDA y en la salud de la mujer en el mundo en desarrollo.<\/span><\/p>

Por medio de sus conocimientos especializados como cient\u00edfico, gestor y activista, ha instado a los l\u00edderes mundiales a examinar el SIDA dentro de la perspectiva del desarrollo social y econ\u00f3mico y de la seguridad.<\/p>

Bajo su liderazgo, el ONUSIDA ha pasado a ser el principal impulsor de la acci\u00f3n mundial contra el SIDA. Ha reunido a diez organizaciones del sistema de las Naciones Unidas alrededor de un programa com\u00fan contra el SIDA, encabezando la reforma de las Naciones Unidas.<\/p>

El Dr Piot se gradu\u00f3 en medicina por la Universidad de Gante y obtuvo un doctorado en microbiolog\u00eda por la Universidad de Amberes, ambas en B\u00e9lgica. Despu\u00e9s de graduarse en la escuela de medicina, descubri\u00f3 junto a otro cient\u00edfico el virus de Ebola en el Zaire, en 1976.<\/p>

En el decenio de 1980, el Dr. Piot lanz\u00f3 y ampli\u00f3 una serie de proyectos de colaboraci\u00f3n en \u00c1frica, concretamente en Burundi, C\u00f4te d'Ivoire, Kenya, Tanzan\u00eda y Zaire. El Proyecto SIDA in Kinshasa (Zaire), fue el primer proyecto internacional sobre el SIDA en \u00c1frica, y se reconoce ampliamente que proporcion\u00f3 las bases de nuestra comprensi\u00f3n de la infecci\u00f3n por el VIH en \u00c1frica. Fue profesor de microbiolog\u00eda y salud p\u00fablica en el Instituto de Medicina Tropical de Amberes y en las universidades de Nairobi, Bruselas y Lausana.<\/p>

En 1992, el Dr Piot se uni\u00f3 al Programa Mundial del SIDA, de la Organizaci\u00f3n Mundial de la Salud, en Ginebra, como Director Asociado.<\/p>

Nacido en 1949 en B\u00e9lgica, el Dr Piot habla tres idiomas con fluidez y es autor de 15 libros y de m\u00e1s de 500 art\u00edculos cient\u00edficos. Ha recibido numerosos premios por su labor cient\u00edfica y social, y en 1995 el Rey Alberto II de B\u00e9lgica le confiri\u00f3 el t\u00edtulo de Bar\u00f3n. Es miembro del Instituto de Medicina de la Academia Nacional de Ciencias de los Estados Unidos, de la<\/span><\/p>
