Peter Shaffer naci\u00f3 en Liverpool, Inglaterra, el 15 de mayo de 1926. Educado en St. Paul\u00b4s y Trinity College, Cambridge, muestra un gran dominio de la t\u00e9cnica esc\u00e9nica, y en sus dramas trata temas de inter\u00e9s para la clase media.<\/p>

Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial trabaj\u00f3 como recluta en una mina de carb\u00f3n, despu\u00e9s estudi\u00f3 Historia en la Universidad de Cambridge y desde all\u00ed parti\u00f3 a Nueva York. All\u00ed trabaj\u00f3 en la librer\u00eda Doubleday, y en la biblioteca de la calle 42. Tres a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde regresa a Londres convencido de sus escasas posibilidades para encontrar trabajo. Escribe entonces su primera obra, Five Finger Exercise, producida en 1958 con gran \u00e9xito (en Nueva York en 1959, donde gan\u00f3 el Drama Critics Award), y por ello, se tranquiliza en cuanto a la necesidad de trabajar en otras tiendas u oficinas.<\/p>

Le siguen The private Ear (1962), colecci\u00f3n de piezas cortas; The Public Eye (1962); The royal hunt of the sun (1964), una visi\u00f3n \u00e9pica de la conquista de Per\u00fa; Black comedy (1965), sobre el comportamiento del ser humano cuando cree actuar sin ser visto; Equus (1973), de la que se llevan a cabo un millar de representaciones en Broadway y gana el Tony Award y el Drama Critics Award, este drama fue llevado a la gran pantalla en 1979; Amadeus (1979), en la que reelabora el tema de la relaci\u00f3n entre Mozart y Salieri, se estren\u00f3 en Broadway en diciembre de 1980 y fue llevada al cine por Milos Forman en 1984; Lettice and Lovage (1987) y The gift of the gorgon (1992).<\/p>

Ha sido merecedor de multitud de premios entre los que destacan: Premio de teatro del Evening Standard y Premio de la New York Drama Critics Circle a la mejor obra extranjera por Five finger exercise; premio de la New York Drama Critics y Antoinette Perry por Equus; y Globo de Oro por Amadeus.<\/p>
