Se licencia en la Facultad de Filosof\u00eda y Letras de Valladolid en 1942 con Premio Extraordinario. Su vocaci\u00f3n investigadora se centr\u00f3 desde sus primeros estudios tras la licenciatura en los Siglos de Oro espa\u00f1oles. En un primer momento, enfoc\u00f3 sus intereses hacia la figura del rey Felipe II; en 1947, se doctora en la Universidad Central con Premio Extraordinario con su Tesis Doctoral sobre Felipe II e Isabel de Inglaterra.<\/p>

En 1950 obtiene su segundo Doctorado en Bolonia cum laude, recibiendo el Premio \u201cVittorio Emanuele\u201d.<\/p>

Pero ya desde estas fechas comienza a interesarse por la figura de Carlos V, el \u00faltimo Emperador de Europa. Con rigor erudito, domina la ampl\u00edsima bibliograf\u00eda referente al Emperador y a su \u00e9poca, superando las trabas iniciales que el desconocimiento del ingl\u00e9s y del franc\u00e9s supon\u00eda para sus estudios.

En 1954 ingresa por oposici\u00f3n en el cuerpo de Investigadores del C.S.I.C., donde alcanza la m\u00e1xima categor\u00eda de Profesor de Investigaci\u00f3n. A partir de este momento, van apareciendo sus ediciones, estudios y publicaciones sobre la figura de Carlos V. En 1956, todav\u00eda como investigador del C.S.I.C., edita las Memorias del Emperador. Acto seguido, emprende una de las mayores aventuras intelectuales de la historiograf\u00eda reciente: la preparaci\u00f3n de un vasto e in\u00e9dito corpus documental que aguardaba su publicaci\u00f3n en los anaqueles del Archivo de Simancas, de la Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid, de la Real Academia de la Historia o de la Real Biblioteca de Palacio. Esta empresa, auspiciada por la Fundaci\u00f3n Juan March, se contin\u00faa en a\u00f1os posteriores con las consultas de los fondos de las bibliotecas nacionales de Bruselas y Par\u00eds. En 1960, y merced a una nueva ayuda concedida por el Ministerio de Educaci\u00f3n, accede a los importantes fondos hasb\u00fargicos de la Biblioteca Nacional de Viena, complet\u00e1ndose en ese momento un monumental Corpus documental de Carlos V, publicados entre 1973 y 1981 en sus cinco vol\u00famenes, que es considerada como una de las m\u00e1ximas aportaciones hispanas al conocimiento de la \u00e9poca del Emperador.<\/p>

Por estos a\u00f1os, ya desempe\u00f1a la C\u00e1tedra de Historia Moderna en la Universidad de Salamanca, obtenida en 1965, ciudad en la que reside desde entonces, dedicado a la ense\u00f1anza y a la investigaci\u00f3n.<\/p>

El bagaje investigador y de lecturas previo, am\u00e9n del conocimiento profundo de la documentaci\u00f3n hist\u00f3rica estudiada, editada y comentada, fundamentan otros trabajos historiogr\u00e1ficos del profesor Fern\u00e1ndez \u00c1lvarez que van siendo publicados a la par que su Corpus documental. Entre su ampl\u00edsima lista de libros, art\u00edculos y contribuciones en vol\u00famenes colectivos, merecen destacarse especialmente su an\u00e1lisis del idearium pol\u00edtico de Carlos V, la publicaci\u00f3n de los diferentes Testamentos y Codicilos del Emperador, la biograf\u00eda del Emperador (Carlos V. Un hombre para Europa, la m\u00e1s reciente Carlos V. El C\u00e9sar y el Hombre) y de su hijo Felipe (Felipe II y su tiempo).<\/p>

En 1985 recibe el Premio Nacional de Historia de Espa\u00f1a por su libro La sociedad espa\u00f1ola en el siglo de Oro (Madrid, 1989, 2 vols.). En 1987 ingresa en la Real Academia de la Historia con un discurso sobre el Madrid de Felipe II. A poco, es nombrado Profesor Em\u00e9rito de la Universidad de Salamanca, cumpliendo en 1992 sus 50 a\u00f1os dedicados a la docencia universitaria y a la investigaci\u00f3n hist\u00f3rica, preferentemente sobre la Espa\u00f1a de los Austrias. El 7 de octubre de 1992 ingresa en Lisboa como Acad\u00e9mico de M\u00e9rito de la Academia Portuguesa de Historia. En 1993 pronuncia su discurso de ingreso en el Centro de Estudios Salmantinos, perteneciendo asimismo al Instituto de Estudios Zamoranos Flori\u00e1n de Ocampo y al Real Instituto de Estudios Asturianos. En septiembre de 1994 es designado, por unanimidad, Profesor Em\u00e9rito del Colegio Libre de Em\u00e9ritos. Fund\u00f3 en 1976 el Colegio Universitario de Zamora, del que fue su Director durante seis a\u00f1os. Como Director del Departamento de Historia Moderna de la Universidad de Salamanca, durante veintid\u00f3s a\u00f1os, form\u00f3 una de las principales escuelas de modernistas hispanos. Es autor de 34 libros y de m\u00e1s de 100 art\u00edculos, en su mayor\u00eda sobre la Espa\u00f1a de los Austrias, en la que es considerado como uno de los m\u00e1ximos especialistas a nivel mundial, habiendo sido traducida su biograf\u00eda sobre Carlos V: Un hombre para Europa al ingl\u00e9s (Londres, 1975) y al alem\u00e1n (Stuttgart, 1977). Su reciente biograf\u00eda sobre Juana la Loca (Palencia, 1994) es considerada como la m\u00e1s completa y l\u00edrica sobre aquella desventurada Reina, estando en marcha su traducci\u00f3n al japon\u00e9s. Del resto de su obra escrita cabr\u00eda destacar sus dos vol\u00famenes completos de la Historia de Espa\u00f1a Men\u00e9ndez Pidal (XIX: La Espa\u00f1a del siglo xvi. Madrid, 1989; XX: La Espa\u00f1a del Emperador Carlos V, Madrid, 1993, 6\u00aa ed.) y sus biograf\u00edas sobre Jovellanos (Madrid 1988) y sobre Fray Luis de Le\u00f3n (Madrid 1991). Recientemente, y como Profesor Em\u00e9rito del Colegio Libre de Em\u00e9ritos, ha aparecido un amplio estudio sobre Felipe II y su tiempo, en 3 vol\u00famenes.<\/p>
