Yuste Foundation Announces the Call for Applications for 18 Carlos V European Award – Angela Merkel European Research and Mobility Grants for European Studies
The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation has opened the call for applications for 18 Carlos V European Award – Angela Merkel European Research and Mobility Grants for European Studies. Each grant is valued at €2,500, with a total allocation of €45,000 for this call. (07/01/2025)
In its 14th edition, the jury of the Carlos V European Award honoured German chancellor Angela Merkel in “recognition of her long political career in the service of Europe, having been a strong supporter of the European integration process and of the strategic role of Europe in the international scene”. Considering these arguments, and following consultation with the awardee, the topic for the 14th edition of the European Research and Mobility Grants for European Studies will be: “The fortune of being united: Securing and strengthening Europe’s cohesion”.
The beneficiaries of these grants are expected to address the specific priorities outlined in the call, such as the contribution of European institutions throughout history to the European integration process; the role of European institutions and bodies versus the role of States in the development of solidarity and European territorial cohesion; the contribution of culture, education, and civil society in promoting cohesion policies; the evolution of the functioning of institutions during the construction and integration process; or the role of women in the European integration process, among other work areas.
The financial support will be used to fund the study and research, as well as the mobility required to carry out the research and prepare the papers to be presented as part of the Carlos V European Award Doctoral Seminar on Multidisciplinary Studies of Contemporary Europe, which will take place at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste. It will also cover the preparation of research papers within the framework of the call, which will later be published in a collective volume by Yuste Foundation, and the mobility of the researchers to conduct their research, participate in the seminar, and, finally, attend the event for the presentation of the published research.
The beneficiaries must be enrolled in a doctoral programme and be in the phase of preparing their doctoral thesis in History, Political Science, Economics, Law, or other disciplines within the Humanities and Social Sciences, as well as other branches of science, on a topic related to the subject and focus outlined in the call. Additionally, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in either English or Spanish, with a level of at least B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
The deadline for submitting applications is 18 February 2025. The procedure for granting the grants is competitive and follows a public call for applications.
In evaluating applications, the jury will consider not only academic merits but also the focus of the contribution, the alignment with the call’s topic, the quality of the proposed topic, methodology, and the structure of the work.
Applications, along with the required documentation, must be submitted electronically by completing the digital form available at the following link: https://www.fundacionyuste.org/becas-premio-europeo-carlos-v/ and sending the required documentation to the following email address: becas@fundacionyuste.org
The jury will consist of distinguished figures from the academic and university sectors with professional backgrounds related to the European Union and the topic and priorities of this call. After evaluating the submitted applications, the jury will issue a report detailing the results of the evaluation.
