The Emperor’s Concert Series Begins with a Repertoire Centred on Spanish and Portuguese Songbooks

The musical ensemble Carmina Terrarum will perform next Saturday, 20 September, at 1 p.m. at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste, as part of the Emperor’s Concert Series organised by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation together with Patrimonio Nacional. (16/09/2025)

The programme, entitled “El corazón del cancionero: cancioneros españoles y portugueses”, offers an engaging and varied journey through some of the most representative songbooks of both the Spanish and Portuguese Renaissance. It features works by Luis de Milán, from the Cancionero de Elvas, the Cancionero de París, and the Cancionero de Palacio.

These pieces will be performed in an entertaining and enlightening concert that will reflect much of the concerns and way of life of the peoples of the Iberian Peninsula during the Renaissance. Among the works to be performed are “Niño Dios d’amor herido”, “Dónde estás señora mía”, “Falau niña amor”, and “Recercada sobre la Spagna”, among others.

Carmina Terrarum emerged from the collaboration of a trio of experienced performers based in Seville: Aníbal Soriano, César Carazo, and Cristina Bayón, all specialising in and dedicated to the concert performance and scholarly dissemination of Early Music. The ensemble is an artistic project that seeks to explore programmes recreating borderland music across both space and time, spanning the former kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula and the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque.
