The European Union is facing new challenges linked to the ongoing changes taking place at global level. Competitiveness and the social model will be key to responding to this reality, by advancing innovation and technological development, deepening the protection of social rights, strengthening cooperation between States, and enhancing strategic autonomy in the fields of energy and defence.

The seminar “The European Union in the New Global Context: Enhancing Competitiveness through the Social Model”, organised by the Spanish Economic and Social Council (CES) and Yuste Foundation, aims to provide answers and foster debate on key issues for the present and future of the EU.

The Ministry of Defence promotes the development of a culture of security and defence with the aim of ensuring that Spanish society understands, values and identifies with its history and with the effective and supportive efforts through which the Armed Forces safeguard national interests. Fostering awareness and a culture of security and defence is a priority objective. Bringing defence closer to citizens is an essential part of the culture of National Security, serving as a tool to achieve a society that is committed to and actively engaged in its own security.

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation aims to contribute to the promotion of democracy, respect for human rights, the fostering of peace and international harmony, as well as the comprehensive, balanced and sustainable development of all peoples and nations worldwide, particularly through the promotion of culture, research, the dissemination of knowledge and social integration.

The Ministry of Defence, the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation and the University of Extremadura have been collaborating for years in the organisation of joint academic activities, among which defence sessions focusing on Europe and Ibero-America as geographical areas of study are of particular importance.

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation organises the Security Sessions in Ibero-America, under the umbrella of the SCHOOL OF GUADALUPE, with the aim of promoting dialogue on security and defence policy, including the new threats and challenges of the international strategic landscape, with particular attention to Europe and Ibero-America, as well as the adaptation and response of the Armed Forces to these new challenges.

The gathering of legal specialists from such diverse yet closely interconnected professions as the judiciary, notarial, and registry sectors around the themes of agriculture and livestock presents a unique opportunity to advance the study of a field that has been relatively unexplored from a legal science perspective.

The meeting is held under the auspices of the General Council of the Judiciary and the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, an institution with a transnational, Europeanist, and Ibero-American vocation. This gives the meeting a scope that extends beyond our borders and, it must be said, benefits from the invaluable collaboration of the distinguished Notarial and Registral Colleges of Extremadura. They provide the perfect framework and combination to achieve the goal of granting the recognition and visibility deserved by a sector that, for a long time, was the economic driving force of virtually all of Spain and continues to be so in large areas of our territory.

Now, all that remains is for the topics chosen for the various lectures and round tables to spark interest among speakers and attendees alike, in line with this ambitious goal, and for constructive dialogue and debate to give rise to genuine proposals for the improvement and promotion of the sector.

The Her Voice project consortium is led by UNED (National University of Distance Education) in Denia (Spain) and includes partners from the University of Arts of Targu Mures (Romania); Gmina Miasta Sopotu (Poland); the Lviv Polytechnic National University (Ukraine); the Usamborgia Cultural Association (Italy); Saldus Novada Pasvaldinba (Latvia); Podjetniski Inkubator Kocevje, Javni Zavod Za Podjetnistvoizobraževanje In Druge Dejavnosti (Slovenia); the Jean Monnet Association (France); and the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation (Spain).

The project consists of eight international events organised in the partner countries. It aims to engage directly over 400 participants and indirectly more than 25,000 people, with activities addressing key issues such as the promotion of women’s full enjoyment of their rights, gender equality, including work-life balance, women’s empowerment, the integration of a gender perspective, and its impact on sustainable development.

The project seeks to raise awareness and knowledge among EU citizens, focusing on social inclusion and the gender dimension, with the goal of strengthening citizen participation in general and fostering dialogue among different societal actors, ultimately contributing to a more inclusive and democratic Europe.

The SCHOOL OF GUADALUPE was created as a result of various activities organised by the Foundation within the framework of the event of exceptional public interest, the “Holy Year of Guadalupe”, the aim of which is to promote and invigorate local culture and tourism through the recovery, appreciation and dissemination of cultural and natural heritage, the promotion of religious initiatives such as the pilgrimage route, and the strengthening of ties with Ibero-America.

Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste, 22–23 May, 2025 | Real Hospital de Mineros de San Rafael and Parque Minero de Almadén, 16th and 17th October 2025

This event is organised within the framework of the IVEPC project ⸺Integrar los valores europeos en el patrimonio cultural⸺ (Integrating European Values into Cultural Heritage) and aims to explore strategies for better embedding European values in sites certified with the European Heritage Label (EHL), as part of a pilot initiative. The Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste will serve as the initial reference point, with the goal of enhancing the visibility of these sites and promoting cooperation among managers of European cultural heritage.

During the event, key topics will include how to promote European values through cultural heritage; fostering local culture and territorial identity through European cultural heritage in rural settings; developing tourism around European Heritage Label (EHL) sites and its contribution to sustainable socio-economic development; strengthening European identity and civic participation through cultural heritage; and how to effectively communicate and raise awareness of European cultural heritage. Participants will also tour the site with the aim of developing recommendations to help shape strategies that align its offerings with European values.

The event will bring together representatives and managers of sites bearing the European Heritage Label, cultural heritage experts, representatives of cultural routes certified by the Council of Europe, cultural institutions and academics, as well as officials from governmental and international bodies (European Commission, Council of Europe, Ministry of Culture, and the Regional Government of Extremadura).

The overarching goal of the project is to integrate European values into cultural heritage in general, and particularly within sites recognised with the European Heritage Label, while also promoting the visibility and relevance of these certified sites and fostering European integration. The initiative is led by the Monastery of Yuste in collaboration with Minas de Almadén, Parque Minero, aiming to strengthen the recognition of both sites as part of Europe’s shared heritage. Through a series of cultural activities, networking opportunities, and training sessions, the European connections of these sites will be strengthened, highlighting their importance not only from a historical and cultural perspective, but also in the transmission of European values.

Brussels, 3^rd December 2024, Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union – REPER

As a follow-up to the meeting held in Guadalupe on 20–21 November, Yuste Foundation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation of the Government of Spain, will organise a meeting in Brussels. This event will bring together participants from the main meeting, along with some additional Brussels-based stakeholders, to develop a follow-up document with recommendations for the future of EU-LAC relations based on the outcomes of the main meeting.

This meeting will take place in a hybrid format, both in person and online. Given the possible participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares, and the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, around 50 experts in the field will convene at the Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union. Ambassadors from Latin American and Caribbean countries represented in Brussels, as well as other key stakeholders —including senior officials from EU institutions, with representatives from the European Commission and the European Parliament working within the EU-LAC framework— will be invited to attend and participate in the discussions.

In a world that is constantly changing and where global challenges for humanity are increasing, Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean —States from both regions— must seize the opportunity provided by their shared relations, cultural, historical, and social legacy, as well as the existing dialogue platforms that unite them, to join forces and respond together to the major global challenges threatening our territories. Only together will we be able to find feasible solutions that we can share, and to create mechanisms of cooperation and joint work, such as the Global Gateway initiative, which will enable us to optimise our resources and provide our territories with powerful tools to improve the lives of our citizens. This will allow us to tackle the major global challenges while minimising their impact and creating environments of security and certainty that contribute to ensuring progress, stability, democracy, and the rule of law. A clear example is the development of the EU’s “Strategic Autonomy”, initiated during the Covid-19 pandemic, as a priority that requires cooperation with reliable international partners, where Latin America and the Caribbean can and do play an essential role. At the same time, it is necessary to advance cooperation agreements that reinforce the geopolitical interests of both regions, such as the EU-Mercosur Association Agreement.

Despite the existing differences and divergent geopolitical views between the two regions, it is imperative to find solutions to the global issues that affect us all and that contribute to the already established work agenda for 2023 to 2025, while also considering recent developments and, above all, the future of these relations. These will undoubtedly be further strengthened at the upcoming Ibero-American Summit, taking place in November in Cuenca (Ecuador), and the CELAC-EU Summit, scheduled for 2025 in Bogotá (Colombia), where new priorities will be set. Among these, the climate crisis, war, or wars, the fight against organised crime, and the management of migration are expected to be key topics on the table. It is essential to analyse recent events, as well as those that will unfold in the coming months, and engage in debate to ensure the proper implementation of the established guidelines, and to identify priority areas for action that need to be developed. This will allow us to define concrete goals, actions, and effective action plans based on facts.

The governments of both regions, their foreign ministries and diplomatic corps, as well as European institutions, and civil society, are obliged to work intensely to create contexts of certainty in an increasingly turbulent and uncertain world. It is therefore necessary to analyse and monitor, based on the aforementioned points, and contribute through reflection, the debate, and knowledge-sharing, while looking ahead to assess the viability of current programmes and agendas, as well as the new challenges that have emerged in recent months. This should be done with the involvement of key stakeholders, including those from civil society working on these issues on the ground, as well as experts from the economic, academic, diplomatic, and political spheres.

The meeting will focus on three main pillars, spread over a day and a half. Each section will feature keynote speeches followed by spaces for debate, reflection, and exchange of views.
