YUSTE FOUNDATION DEBATES ON EUROPEAN INTEGRATION AND ITS SOCIAL MODEL OF FREEDOMS IN PUERTO RICO
The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation and the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico (PUCPR) have organised the academic forum “European Integration and its Social Model of Freedoms”, where European community-building and civic participation are analysed from the perspective of European social thought. (04/10/2024).
The director of Yuste Foundation, Juan Carlos Moreno, and the president of the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, José Antonio Frontera Agenjo, were responsible for presenting and inaugurating this event, which is being held on the island as part of the agreement signed between the two institutions.
During his speech, Juan Carlos Moreno asserted that Spain and the Ibero-American and Caribbean countries have turned their backs on each other for too long, and now is the time to face each other and cooperate, a task in which Extremadura seeks to play a leading role. Therefore, in the coming years, they intend to launch a student exchange programme between Puerto Rico and Yuste Foundation.
Yuste’s academician and professor of Contemporary History at the University of Extremadura (UEX), Enrique Moradiellos, gave a lecture on the historical development of the European Union. Former Member of the European Parliament, Alejandro Cercas, focused his speech on the European social State model, while the professor of Ecclesiastical Law at the University of Extremadura, Jaime Rossell, spoke about freedom of expression and religion in European pluralism.
This session is part of the agreement signed between Yuste Foundation and the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, aimed at creating a collaborative space for the development of joint actions and activities that contribute to the education and training of students and faculty. The agreement outlines areas of collaboration, such as the development of training programmes or research staff exchanges, the use of specific facilities and equipment, the promotion of technology and innovation, and mutual collaboration in workshops, seminars, or events organised by either party.
Moreover, the Extremaduran delegation took advantage of their stay in Puerto Rico to hold a meeting with officials from the Spanish Consulate to arrange future academic activities of Yuste Foundation on the island, as well as other meetings with university professors to exchange teaching experiences.
