An Expert Meeting in Yuste Will Analyse How to Integrate European Values into Cultural Heritage
With the aim of exploring strategies to better integrate European values into cultural heritage, and more specifically into sites certified with the European Heritage Label, the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation and Patrimonio Nacional, in collaboration with Minas de Almadén – Parque Minero, have organised the meeting “Integrating European Values into Cultural Heritage”, which will take place on 22 and 23 May at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste. (21/05/2025)
This pilot project has used the Monastery, located in Cuacos de Yuste, as a reference point in order to enhance the visibility of the sites and promote cooperation between experts and managers of European cultural heritage.
During the meeting, topics will be addressed such as how to promote European values through cultural heritage; fostering culture and territorial identity through European cultural heritage in rural environments; the development of tourism in the surroundings of sites holding the label and their contribution to sustainable socio-economic development; promoting European identity and citizen participation through cultural heritage; and how to communicate and make European cultural heritage more visible.
The meeting will feature the participation of María Dolores Menéndez Company, manager of Patrimonio Nacional; Adela Montaña Rueda, general director of Libraries, Archives, and Cultural Heritage at the Regional Ministry of Culture, Tourism, Youth, and Sports of the Regional Government of Extremadura; Francisco Javier Carrasco, director of Industrial Activities at Minas de Almadén; José Manuel Fernández Arroyo, deputy head of the Creative Europe Unit at the European Commission; Sergio Ortega, national coordinator of the European Heritage Label in the Ministry of Culture; and Miguel Senra Hermana, head of Culture and Citizenship for the European Heritage Label.
Representatives from Patrimonio Nacional, Yuste Foundation, the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe, and certified routes with this distinction, such as the European Route of Historic Gardens, the Routes of Emperor Charles V, and the Transhumance Trails and Rural Roads, will also participate. Representatives from other sites certified with the European Heritage Label, such as the Archives of the Crown of Aragon and the Fortress of Sagres in Portugal, as well as professionals from the cultural sector, including Hispania Nostra and Ibermuseos, and academic representatives from the Universities of Extremadura, La Laguna, and Granada, will also attend.

This initiative is led by Yuste Foundation and Patrimonio Nacional, representing the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste, in collaboration with Minas de Almadén – Parque Minero. It aims to strengthen the visibility and relevance of both sites as part of a common European heritage. Through a series of cultural activities, networking, and training, the European connections of these sites will be fostered, highlighting their importance not only at a historical and cultural level but also in transmitting European values. The project is co-financed by the European Union under the Creative Europe programme for the European Heritage Label and is also supported by the EHL-Bureau.
