The award ceremony will take place at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste on the occasion of Europe Day in 2026, at an event presided over by His Majesty the King of Spain, or by the member of the Royal Family to whom he may delegate.

Nominations may be submitted in Spanish or English by previous award winners; members of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste; Spanish embassies anywhere in the world; diplomatic missions in Spain of the Member States of the European Union (EU), of countries belonging to the European Free Trade Association (EFTA); members of the European Economic Area (EEA), or of candidate and potential candidate countries to the EU.

Proposals may also be submitted by institutions, public bodies, cultural, scientific, academic or socio-economic entities, as well as by any interested person who is a national of or resident in EU Member States, in countries belonging to EFTA, or in EEA member countries.

The winning nominee must undertake to attend the award ceremony in person and to take part in the activities and events organised by the Foundation in the days before and after the ceremony.

The jury will be composed of prominent figures from the political, academic, scientific, institutional, social and cultural spheres of Extremadura, the rest of Spain and Europe, including former award winners and members of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste.

Yuste Foundation Announces the Research Prize to Ibero-American Doctoral Theses (30/12/2025)

With the aim of supporting the development of research work and encouraging reflection and the exchange of ideas among university students, researchers and professionals on Ibero-American and European issues, the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation hereby announces the Research Prize to Ibero-American Doctoral Theses, endowed with a prize of 3,000 euros and the publication of the winning work in the Foundation’s book series “Tesis Doctorales”.

Doctoral theses addressing relations between Spain, Portugal or Europe as a whole and Ibero-America, and vice versa, from a historical, cultural, social, scientific, economic or any other field of study perspective, are eligible to apply for this research award.

Eligible theses must be written in Spanish, English or Portuguese; must have been defended in Portugal, Spain or in any Ibero-American or European country within the two years prior to the publication of the relevant call; must have been awarded the highest grade established under the regulations in force at the time of their defence; and must be unpublished.

With regard to the assessment criteria, literary and scientific quality will be taken into account, with particular emphasis on aspects such as language, creativity, originality and the extent to which the thesis meets the aims and objectives of the Foundation, among others. The authors of the five doctoral theses that obtain the highest scores in the quality assessment stage will proceed to the second stage, which will consist of the defence of the doctoral thesis and responses to the questions put by the assessment commission.

The Board of Trustees and the staff of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation mourn the passing of the Portuguese historian Manuela Mendonça, a member of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste, who took up the Joan of Arc Chair during the ceremony for the awarding of the Carlos V European Award to the French politician Simone Veil in 2008 at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste. Manuela Mendonça was born in Montemor-o-Novo in 1948. She held both a degree and a doctorate in Modern and Contemporary History from the University of Lisbon, where she was a lecturer in the Department of History in the Faculty of Arts. She served as deputy director-general of the National Archive of the Torre do Tombo and as secretary-general of the Portuguese Academy of History, of which she had been president since 2006. She was also a member of more than twenty national and foreign academies, including the Historical Society of the Independence of Portugal, the Royal Academy of History of Spain and the Royal Academy of Moral and Political Sciences of Spain.

A specialist in the history of the Late Middle Ages and in Iberian and Luso-Brazilian relations, she took part in numerous congresses and authored more than three hundred works published in journals, conference proceedings and books, including O Sonho da União Ibérica (1475 / 1479) and História dos Reis de Portugal.

Manuela Mendonça maintained a very close relationship with Yuste Foundation. She served as a member of the jury for the Carlos V European Award in 2011, 2014, 2018, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025. For the book Cuadernos de Yuste No. 3, published in 2005, she wrote the article “Península ibérica: Europa ou ultramar?”

She also signed the Yuste Academy Declaration, “What all European pupils should know about Europe: Towards an interactive curriculum of European civilisation secondary school students”, together with other academicians such as Paul Preston, Martti Ahtisaari and Tzvetan Todorov, who met at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste in 2008.

In 2020, the Newsletter of the Academy of Yuste published an interview with the Portuguese historian in which she stressed the need for Europe to engage in deep reflection in order to “continue along the path of values based on peace, freedom and solidarity”.

Manuela Mendonça took part in and co-directed several of Yuste Foundation’s summer courses under the Campus Yuste programme, including the one held last summer entitled “Portugal, 1974: Society, Culture and Literature in the Carnation Revolution”, and “The Hispanic Kingdoms between Ferdinand the Catholic and Charles V: European and American Political and Cultural Projection”, in 2016. She also delivered the lecture “An Introduction to the History of Portugal up to 1910” at the Spanish-Portuguese seminar entitled “Introduction to the History and Public Law of Portugal”, held at the Faculty of Law in Cáceres.

The director general for External Action of the Regional Government of Extremadura, Pablo Hurtado, opened the Carlos V European Award– European Disability Forum Doctoral Seminar for Multidisciplinary Studies on Contemporary Europe, entitled “United in Diversity: The Impact of the European Union on the Lives of Persons with Disabilities”. The seminar is being held from today until Thursday at the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe and is organised by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation. (16/12/2025)

In his address, the director general highlighted the importance of this international meeting of experts and young researchers, describing it as an example of intergenerational and interdisciplinary collaboration which, over several days, will reflect on “the Europe we are building and the Europe we aspire to”, he said. The selected researchers are carrying out their work at the universities of Almería, Rey Juan Carlos, Valladolid, Barcelona, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura and the Complutense University of Madrid, as well as at the Christian Albrecht University of Kiel (Germany) and the University of Caldas (Colombia).

The Carlos V European Award was presented in 2022 to the European Disability Forum, an organisation representing more than one hundred million people with disabilities and their families across Europe. In this context, Hurtado recalled that, according to figures revealed by the Forum’s president, Ioannis Vardakastanis, at the award ceremony, more than 50% of people with disabilities still feel discriminated against. For this reason, Hurtado said, “we must continue researching and working towards a fairer, more equal and inclusive Europe”.

In Hurtado’s view, diversity is one of the greatest strengths, expressed through the plurality of the citizenry, the richness of our cultures and the diversity of people’s abilities. To work towards this goal, the director general highlighted the grants awarded by Yuste Foundation, as they allow young doctoral candidates from Europe and Ibero-America “to engage with the process of European integration with academic rigour and civic commitment”.

The researchers presenting their work over these days will become part of Yuste’s Euro-Ibero-American Alumni Network, a distinction that entails “acting as ambassadors for the values promoted by the Foundation, which are translated into the fostering of peace and international harmony through the promotion of culture, research, the dissemination of knowledge and social integration”.

The opening of the Doctoral Seminar also featured an address by the guardian and custodian of the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe, friar Vidal Rodríguez, who stated that addressing human disability within the European framework, in the town of Puebla de Guadalupe, demonstrates a high degree of responsibility in the “care of the person and their dignity; a commitment to promoting the quality of life of communities and their comprehensive development”.

In the view of the guardian and custodian, the natural surroundings of the Geopark, the cultural beauty of the Monastery and the Marian devotion that has linked Extremadura with the Americas “speak to us of how worthwhile it is to embark on projects that seek the good of individuals and communities”. In closing, friar Vidal called for education as an indispensable tool for growing in humanity.

For his part, Vardakastanis explained that the title of the Doctoral Seminar reflects the work of the organisation, whose aim is for the European Union to recognise all persons with disabilities as full and equal citizens, empowered to participate in all spheres of life. He stressed that “the European project will not be complete until persons with disabilities can enjoy their rights without legal, physical, social or attitudinal barriers”.

The European Union became the first regional organisation in the world to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, a comprehensive human rights treaty that has since shaped laws, policies, funding instruments and cross-border cooperation affecting millions of persons with disabilities. However, in the view of the president of the European Disability Forum, further progress requires “robust, independent and critical research based on the lived experience of persons with disabilities”.

Vardakastanis concluded his address by encouraging researchers to engage with organisations of persons with disabilities, both at European level and in their own countries, so that “scientific knowledge is incorporated into the advocacy efforts of the movement”.

 Doctoral Seminar

The aim of this meeting is to analyse and debate issues such as the contribution of the European Union to inclusion and to the fulfilment of the rights of persons with disabilities; the role of European institutions and bodies in developing initiatives and policies designed to promote, guarantee and strengthen the rights of persons with disabilities; and the role of the European disability movement in advocating for and contributing to a more inclusive Union for persons with disabilities, among other topics. The papers presented will subsequently be published in the “Cuadernos de Yuste” series edited by Yuste Foundation.

The Doctoral Seminar programme is complemented by contributions from a range of professors and experts, including the co-director of the Chair of Euro-Atlantic Security Culture at the European University of Valencia and member of Yuste’s Euro-Ibero-American Alumni Network, Frédéric Mertens; the researcher at the University of Leuven and member of Yuste’s Alumni Network, Ana Milošević; the professor of American History at the Complutense University of Madrid, Rosa Martínez de Codes; and the Jean Monnet professor of European Integration at Sorbonne University Paris IV, Eric Bussière.

To date, more than 130 researchers have benefited from these grants and are now based at leading universities, institutions and research centres in countries including Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Cyprus, France, Germany, Italy, Mexico, Morocco, Peru, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Spain, the United Kingdom and Ukraine.

The Doctoral Seminar is co-directed by the Jean Monnet professor ad personam and vice-president of the Royal European Academy of Doctors, Teresa Freixes, and by the director of Yuste Foundation, Juan Carlos Moreno. It is supported by the Regional Government of Extremadura, the Provincial Council of Cáceres, the Provincial Council of Badajoz, the Royal Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe and the University of Extremadura. Research and Mobility Grants for European Studies

The Carlos V European Award includes the provision of Doctoral Research and Mobility Grants for European Studies, aimed at researchers preparing a doctoral thesis on the history, memory, and European integration, focusing on the subject chosen by the award recipient in each edition and approached from a multidisciplinary perspective.

The focus of these grants is adapted in each edition to the awardee’s area of expertise, and on this occasion it is the impact of the European Union on the lives of people with disabilities.

Each grant provides individual funding of 2,500 euros, which is intended to support the study and research, mobility to conduct that research, and the preparation of contributions to be presented at the Carlos V European Award Doctoral Seminar of Multidisciplinary Studies on Contemporary Europe. It also covers the development of research papers within the framework of the call, which will later be published as a joint volume by Yuste Foundation, as well as the mobility of the researchers to carry out their work, participate in the seminar, and finally attend the presentation of the published research.

Carlos V European Award – European Disability Forum

In the 15th edition of the Carlos V European Award, the jury presented the prize to the European Disability Forum (EDF), a European NGO that brings together organisations representing 100 million people with disabilities and their families across Europe. According to the jury’s decision, at the time of receiving the award, the EDF had spent 25 years “defending the rights of people with disabilities and promoting their inclusion, caring for those who need it most and who suffer multiple discrimination for having different capacities, valuing their dignity as people and the great value they are to society. Through its work, the EDF promotes a more inclusive Europe and a more social, just and egalitarian Europe, and contributes to the process of European integration, to the values that the European Union defends and to ensuring that all citizens can live together in this common area on an equal footing and without being discriminated against because of their social capacities. It thus favours a more humane Europe that focuses on the well-being of its citizens, providing strong legal frameworks to defend inclusion, accessibility, freedom of movement, independent life, dignity, non-discrimination, active and effective participation in society, respect for difference as part of human diversity and other fundamental rights and freedoms”.

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation is organising the 8^th International Congress “Relations between Latin America, the Caribbean and Europe” in La Antigua, Guatemala, which, under the title “Cultures and Identities in the Ibero-American Space: Spain’s Contribution”, aims to continue deepening the study of the interaction that has taken place over the past five centuries between Extremadura, Europe and the Americas. This congress follows on from others held since 2021 in Guadalupe and in various American cities such as Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, and Lima, Peru.

The event, organised in collaboration with the Rafael Landívar University of Guatemala and the Research Centre for Ibero-America Studies (CEIB) at Rey Juan Carlos University, has brought together representatives from Guatemalan institutions and academia, as well as the mayor of La Antigua, Juan Manuel Asturias, and the ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain to Guatemala and Belize, Clara Girbau Ronda, who inaugurated the congress alongside the director of Yuste Foundation, Juan Carlos Moreno Piñero; the academic vice-rector of the Rafael Landívar University, Martha Pérez de Chen; and the director of the AECID Training Centre in La Antigua, Elena Diego Castellanos.

Topics addressed at the congress include cultural diversity, identities and territory in the Euro-Latin American space; cultural cooperation within the Ibero-American sphere; tangible and intangible cultural heritage and assets; new mechanisms for cultural cooperation in the Ibero-American space; geopolitics and the Ibero-American cultural charter.

The congress, held at the Spanish Cooperation Training Centre in La Antigua and conducted in both in-person and online formats, registered 150 participants from 14 countries: Argentina, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Cuba, Spain, the United States, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Paraguay, the Czech Republic, Romania, and Uruguay.

The organising committee of the congress was composed of the director of Yuste Foundation, Juan Carlos Moreno; the dean of the Faculty of Political and Social Sciences at the Rafael Landívar University, Lourdes Balconi Villaseñor; the full professor of Public International Law and International Relations and director of the Research Centre for Ibero-America Studies (CEIB) at the Rey Juan Carlos University, Cástor Díaz Barrado; and the full professor of Public International Law and International Relations at the Rey Juan Carlos University, Sagrario Morán Blanco.

Memorandum of understanding signed between Yuste Foundation and the Rafael Landívar University

The congress also provided the framework for the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Yuste Foundation and the Rafael Landívar University, signed by the rector, Miquel Cortés Bofill, and by Juan Carlos Moreno.

The purpose of this memorandum is to establish a framework for collaboration in the design, development, implementation and joint delivery of various academic cooperation activities of mutual interest and benefit to both parties. These include exploring avenues for academic and cultural cooperation through the joint organisation of seminars, conferences, courses, research programmes and publications on topics of common interest; promoting the exchange of researchers, lecturers and students; and fostering academic mobility within inter-university cooperation programmes and international networks.

This memorandum seeks to lay the groundwork for a future framework agreement that will govern the legal, academic and financial aspects of the specific actions to be carried out.

The San Francisco del Berrocal Convent in Belvís de Monroy, the departure point of the Twelve Apostles of Mexico, relived history with the presentation of the book Los franciscanos en la América Hispana: revisión e interpretación del legado de los Doce Apóstoles de México, a multidisciplinary collective work that brings together the content of the International Congress on the legacy of these twelve friars, held in 2024 in Guadalupe, Cáceres and Belvís. The publication, edited by the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation and the Royal Academy of Extremadura of Letters and Arts, in collaboration with the Belvís de Monroy Town Council, constitutes a key contribution to the understanding of one of the most significant episodes of Spain’s presence in the Americas. With this publication, coordinated by RAEX academics Sixto Sánchez and José Julián Barriga, a research and dissemination project on Ibero-American issues comes to a close.

During the presentation of the book, the director of Yuste Foundation, Juan Carlos Moreno, highlighted the commitment of the twelve Franciscans to justice and the dignity of Indigenous peoples, denouncing the abuses committed by the colonial authorities against them. He also stated that, despite the mistakes made by Spain in the Americas, “its achievements must also be acknowledged and celebrated”, citing as an example the Franciscans who departed from Belvís, “whose testimony of faith, commitment and courage continues to challenge us five centuries later”.

The Berrocal Convent was, for centuries, a centre of spirituality, discipline and reform within the Franciscan Order, as well as becoming a focal point for Ibero-American outreach. For this reason, the mayor of Belvís, Fernando Sánchez, expressed his wish that the convent “be a living place, a cultural, historical and academic centre of reference, and a symbol of Extremadura’s historical presence in the world”, open to research and host to seminars, congresses and international meetings that strengthen the shared ties between Extremadura, Spain and Ibero-America.

According to María del Mar Lozano, director of the Academy of Extremadura of Letters and Arts, this publication brings to a close a project that has delved, from an interdisciplinary perspective, into the commemoration of the five-hundredth anniversary of the departure from the San Francisco del Berrocal Convent of the so-called Twelve Apostles of Mexico. In her view, it is essential reading to shed light on the progress made in understanding the Franciscan mission of evangelisation in the Americas, but also “to explore other related issues that have led us to comprehend something as profound as the embodiment of many sixteenth-century Humanist ideas in the encounter with the Indigenous reality and the many legacies that this produced”, she explained.

Also taking part in the presentation was José Julián Barriga, member of the Royal Academy of Extremadura and co-editor of the book alongside professor Sixto Sánchez, who stated that this publication seeks to “revitalise, review and update the knowledge and historiography of one of the most significant episodes of Spain’s presence in the Americas, becoming a paradigm of universal humanism in defence of equality and human dignity”.

Fray Vidal Rodríguez, guardian and custodian of the Monastery of Santa María de Guadalupe, in turn, remarked that the publication presented is “a new creation, the result of a collective work that looks to the future and invites further study, but above all, invites gratitude”.

The volume is divided into four chapters, respectively addressing the historical and historiographical context, the spiritual mission undertaken by the Franciscans in the New World, intercultural mestizaje, and the humanising action carried out by the “Twelve”. It includes the sixteen lectures and an equal number of papers presented at the International Congress, preceded by an introduction by the president of the Regional Government of Extremadura, María Guardiola, and forewords by the director of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation, Juan Carlos Moreno, and by the director of the Royal Academy of Extremadura of Letters and Arts, María del Mar Lozano Bartolozzi.

The chapters of the volume are written by experts and scholars from the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and the universities of Extremadura, Valladolid, Seville, León, Almería and Salamanca, as well as from the Pontifical Antonianum University in Rome and other institutes of historical research, including the Mexican Academy of History.

With this initiative, the two organising entities sought to revitalise, review and update the knowledge and historiography of one of the most significant episodes of Spain’s presence in the Americas, as well as a paradigm of universal humanism in defence of equality and human dignity.

The Italian educator Sofia Corradi, better known as “Mamma Erasmus” and awarded the Carlos V European Award in 2016, has passed away at the age of 91 in Rome. Corradi studied at the Columbia Graduate School of Law, earning a Master in Comparative Law. She graduated with honours in Law from the University of Rome La Sapienza and conducted research on the right to education as a fundamental human right at the UN Human Rights Commission, the Hague Academy of International Law, and the London School of Economics. Sofia Corradi received the award on 9 May 2016 at a solemn ceremony presided over by HM king Felipe VI at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste. The jury of the Carlos V European Award, convened by Yuste Foundation, decided to honour her for “her career and, above all, her great commitment and contribution to the process of European integration by means of the design and implementation of the ERASMUS initiative of the European Union, as well as her work and endeavour on behalf of academic mobility, focussing on young European students as a guarantee of tomorrow and the future of Europe”.

During her speech at the award ceremony, Corradi, while expressing her deep emotion at receiving an honour bearing the name of the emperor symbolising European unity, emphasised the value of the Erasmus programme, which she helped to promote, as one of the most powerful initiatives for fostering European integration, international understanding and peace. In this regard, she recalled that the European programme is not limited to language learning or academic excellence, “but represents a transformative life experience that nurtures autonomy, responsibility, creativity, solidarity and cultural openness”.

Sofia Corradi highlighted that this initiative —conceived during the Cold War and officially launched in 1987— has enabled generations of young Europeans to become “citizens of the world, with greater capacity for dialogue, peaceful conflict resolution and cooperation”. She also defended the Erasmus programme’s role as “an instrument for peacebuilding and prevention at the social and cultural grassroots level”.

To conclude her speech, she encouraged expanding Erasmus Plus cooperation with other regions of the world, placing particular emphasis on Latin America, “to make the most of the shared language and the potential of Spanish universities as strategic partners”.

Sofia Corradi and Yuste

Sofia Corradi actively participated in various activities organised by Yuste Foundation. After receiving the Carlos V European Award, she delivered a lecture at the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at the University of Extremadura. The following year, she gave the opening lecture at the doctoral seminar “Peace and European Values as a Potential Model for Integration and Progress in a Global World”, which brought together ten researchers selected for a research and mobility grant in European studies to present their work to fellow researchers and professors. She later presided over the presentation in Rome of the volume compiling the seminar’s research, which forms part of the book collection “Cuadernos de Yuste”, published by Yuste Foundation. In addition, Sofia Corradi served on the jury of the Carlos V European Award in several editions.
