The European Academy of Yuste Foundation attended a European Routes of Charles V Cooperation Network executive committee meeting at Coudenberg Palace (a former Charles V palace) in Brussels on Wednesday 7th September.
Of particular note on the agenda were the new structure and workings of the scientific committee which will guide the Network and its undertakings in terms of research, heritage, museums, cultural management, and sustainable tourism in Europe, the Mediterranean and Latin America. Several working networks are to be set up in these regions: at Charles universities, primary, and secondary schools, and groups of young researchers, to work on the Charles V period and Charles V himself. The scientific committee coordinated by Jordi Tresserrass is currently made up of 16 experts and teachers from Germany, Belgium, Spain, Italy and Portugal. The committee is responsible for, among other duties, assisting the executive committee and the network with their activities, carrying out work and research proposals, and searching for funding to enable to committee to carry out its duties.
In addition, the executive committee approved planned activities for the coming months, including organising the III Forum for European Cultural Routes which will take place in Sicily in February 2017, and putting on the next scientific committee meeting and general assembly for the Route in 2016 in Lisbon. Also highlighted was the fact that 2017 marks the V Centenary of the arrival of Charles of Habsburg and Castile to Spain, and Charles V’s first landing in Tazones where he arrived to take the Crown through the maternal line from the ruling Hispanic monarchy. In light of this historic event, His Majesty King Felipe VI has accepted the Network’s invitation to be Honorary President of commemoration activities.
Finally the joining of eight new members to the Network was discussed: six Spanish and two Italian members, bringing the total number of Network members to over 70, and next a presentation on a joint project with the Creative Europe European Union programme – a project aiming to foster cooperation and collaboration at a European level.
The executive committee meeting was attended by Fermín Encabo, Network President and Mayor of Jarandilla de la Vera; Quintín Correas Domingo, Network Manager and Manager of Comarca de la Vera Development Association (ADICOVER); Rosa Nicoletta Tomassone from the Luigi Einaudi International Cultural Centre (Italy); Miguel Ángel Martín Ramos, Network Secretary and Head of European Matters at the European Academy of Yuste Foundation; Gianfranco Zanna, from the regional government of Sicily and the Federico II Foundation; Jose María Hernández García, Mayor of Cuacos de Yuste; Bart Doucet, Cultural Matters Manager, Ghent (Belgium); and Fredérique Honoré, Director of Coudenberg Palace (Belgium).
European Cultural Route
The European Routes of Emperor Charles V are official European Cultural Routes certified by the European Council. The certification aims to encourage European citizens to learn more about the plurality and richness of their continent through different routes, positioning tourism as a form of sustainable economic growth for the regions involved. As well as a tool for tourism, it aims to bring about social cohesion and respect for the environment incorporating relevant cultural and natural heritage.
The Routes of Emperor Charles V
The European Routes of Emperor Charles V Network is a cooperation project involving institutions who promote and raise awareness of the Emperor in Europe, to promote and create tourism and cultural interest in the central figure of Emperor Charles V.
