Yuste Foundation Announces the 18th Carlos V European Award

The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation has launched the 18th edition of the Carlos V European Award with the aim of recognising individuals, organisations, projects, or initiatives that have contributed to the broader understanding and promotion of Europe’s cultural, social, scientific, and historical values, or to the unification of the European Union. This award includes an economic endowment of €30,000. (15/01/2025)

The year 2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the first award ceremony held at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste. In 1995, the jury, chaired by Marcelino Oreja Aguirre, granted the award to Jacques Delors for “his open and tolerant spirit and his support of a European model of society based on the defence of democratic values and human rights”.

Nominations may be submitted in Spanish or English and must be proposed by previous award recipients; members of the Academy of Yuste; Spanish embassies worldwide; diplomatic representations in Spain from EU Member States, countries belonging to the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), members of the European Economic Area (EEA), or from EU candidate and potential candidate countries; public, cultural, scientific, academic, or socio-economic institutions, as well as any interested individual from EU Member States, EFTA countries, EEA members, or countries that are candidates or potential candidates for EU accession.

In the words of the regional minister for the Presidency, Interior, and Social Dialogue, Abel Bautista, “in these turbulent times for the geopolitical sphere, the Carlos V European Award stands as a bastion in the defence of the values enshrined in Article 2 of the Treaty on European Union: respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, and the rule of law.”

The Carlos V European Award is granted by the board of trustees of Yuste Foundation, based on the recommendations of a jury composed of distinguished figures from the political, academic, scientific, institutional, social, and cultural spheres of Extremadura, the rest of Spain, and Europe. The jury includes previous award recipients and members of the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste.

The award recipient is required to attend the ceremony in person and participate in the activities and events organised by Yuste Foundation in the days immediately preceding and following the award ceremony. They are also committed to taking part in the European Doctoral Seminar held at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste as part of the call for the Carlos V European Award Grants, which will be announced after the award is granted. Additionally, they will be expected to contribute to the presentation of the doctoral research publications and participate in the subsequent awarding of diplomas.

Applications must be submitted using the form available on Yuste Foundation’s website: https://www.fundacionyuste.org/en/the-european-carlos-v-award/convocatoria-2025/

The deadline for submissions is 17 February 2025.

The Carlos V European Award will be delivered at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste on the occasion of Europe Day 2025, in a ceremony presided over by His Majesty the King of Spain or by a member of the Royal Family delegated by him.
