Campus Yuste Concludes Its Summer Courses by Exploring Health and Illness During the Time of Charles V
The European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste Foundation is bringing this year’s Campus Yuste summer courses to a close with the course “Health, Illness and Nutrition During the Reign of Charles V”, which will take place at the Monastery of San Jerónimo de Yuste from 23 to 25 July, as part of the 26th edition of the University of Extremadura’s International Summer/Autumn Courses. (21/07/2025)
This fourth and final course aims to analyse and reflect on health and illness in the 16th century, taking into account epidemics and other ailments, as well as the different forms of medicine based on science, empiricism or magical-religious beliefs, along with healing and preventive practices, and care for the poor and the sick across the social spectrum. The course will also address the nutritional realities of society at the time, the organisation of healthcare, the training of those practising the profession, and above all, the role of royal power in the 16th century in both Europe and the Americas.
To examine these topics from a multidisciplinary perspective, speakers will include: Gustaaf Janssens, academic at the European and Ibero-American Academy of Yuste and emeritus professor at KU Leuven; Bertha Gutiérrez, full professor of the History of Science at the University of Salamanca; César Chaparro, emeritus full professor at the University of Extremadura; Cecilio Venegas, president of the Official College of Pharmacists of Badajoz; Nikita Harwich, emeritus professor at the University of Paris-Nanterre; and Rosa Perales, professor of Art History at the University of Extremadura.
