The Role of the Spanish and Portuguese Armed Forces in Today’s World Is the Focus of a Series of Sessions Organised in Cáceres
Yuste Foundation, together with the Ministry of Defence, have organised the “3rd Sessions on Security and Defence in the Ibero-American Space”, which will be held in the afternoons of 30 September and 1 October in the assembly hall of the Defence Subdelegation in Cáceres. (24/09/2025)
The programme is entitled “New Geopolitical Challenges: Transformation of the Spanish and Portuguese Armed Forces” and includes lectures by captain Eduardo Mates, who will discuss Spain’s response to threats in the current geopolitical context; lieutenant colonel Pablo Ahedo Cordón of the Spanish Army, who will analyse the impact of digital transformation and artificial intelligence on international relations from a defence perspective; professor José Alberto Azeredo Lopes, of the Faculty of Law at the Catholic University of Porto and former Portuguese minister of National Defence (2015–2018), who will share his vision on the challenges of common defence in the twenty-first century; and colonels Luis Herruzo and Vicente Lunar, who will address the Spanish Armed Forces’ responses to current threats.
Through this initiative, the Ministry of Defence, in collaboration with Yuste Foundation, both aim to foster awareness and a culture of defence so that Spanish society can understand, value, and identify with its history and with the collective and effective effort by which the Armed Forces safeguard national interests.
Among the objectives of Yuste Foundation are promoting democracy, respect for human rights, and the advancement of peace and international concord through the promotion of culture, research, dissemination of knowledge, and social integration. For these reasons, the two institutions have, for several years, joined forces to organise joint academic activities, among which these sessions are of particular importance, focusing geographically on Europe and Ibero-America.
