In recent years, a historiographical reform movement has taken shape regarding the crisis of the Spanish Monarchy in the first decades of the 19^th century and the long process of de-imperialisation that followed it, driven by the official commemoration of several major bicentenaries between 1808 and 1824. The successive commemorations of the Spanish War of Independence against Napoleon and the Hispanic American wars of independence, as well as the Constitution of Cádiz, the Liberal Triennium, and the Battle of Ayacucho, among others, have prompted a vast editorial effort across the entire Ibero-American sphere.

This research focuses on Cuban political life during the periods in which the constitutional regime was in force, understanding politics in a broad sense as the set of practices and means that shaped access to the public sphere and the struggle for power among different actors, with particular attention to sectors beyond the oligarchy and covering, as far as possible, the entire territory rather than Havana alone. This is especially significant in the Cuban case, where capital politics has often been conflated with that of the country as a whole.

It only takes a bit of digging into the documentation of the period to find references, here and there,  to the abundant practices of penal indulgence by the supreme authorities of the monarchy, the superiors of the viceroyalty, and the subordinates in the provinces during the revolutionary process of New Spain between 1808 and 1821. Undoubtedly, this is a central component of the policy of the period; however, it has regularly been treated as a secondary phenomenon compared to the repressive efforts and general hostility of the actors of the time against their respective adversaries. Armed attacks and various forms of punishment, with or without judicial formalities, have filled countless pages of the historiography of independence and have even given rise to a subfield of studies specialising in those means of “force and rigor”.

This evident fascination with the enmity between the supporters of the colonial regime and their opponents, leading to a focus on coercive practices and a wide range of violent manifestations, might be due to the understanding of these as naturally constitutive phenomena of a revolutionary process or a “war of independence”. It might also be that, when compared, this “catalogue of horrors” seems more impressive at first glance than any attempt at reconciliation or decision to moderate and even renounce the exercise of force and punishment. Be that as it may, the verifiable fact is that we know much about the harshness of the conflict and very little, in contrast, about the efforts to make it less brutal and to heal wounds rather than open or deepen them. The objective of this study is to help bring to light this other “gentle” side of the New Spanish revolution.

A character that received little attention from scholars; the last archbishop of New Spain at the time: Pedro José de Fonte. Today, as far as we know of him, he seems to have been a devoted, bureaucratic and obfuscated cleric who was loyal to the king beyond reason. The aim of this book is to explain, based on careful research, how a family, student, ecclesial and political career led him to the highest position within the Novohispanic Church, to his resignation and a life of “exile” in his native country. In this story, a series of human emotions that Fonte experienced is present: pride, hopes, failures, frustrations, displeasures, ingratitude.

Clemente Cruz Peralta has taken special care to trace the circumstances under which young Fonte was formed, the manner in which the weight of family tradition in the service of the king influenced the decisions he took on both sides of the Atlantic and the challenges he faced. After a trip to the city council of Linares de Mora, the author found Fonte’s paternal house, the street that bears his name, the bed he slept in. He saw the distance between the small provincial town and the city of Zaragoza with his own eyes, where this man, who was from Teruel, made carried out his formal studies and where he began his ecclesiastical career. One can, to date, feel the need young people have to leave the small hometown to go conquer the world.

This doctoral thesis, focused on the 18^th century, presents the currents of knowledge and understanding that have existed for centuries between Europe and Ibero-America in a comprehensive, accurate and detailed way, and involves a study of the processes of the movement of people and knowledge in a world that is prone to globalisation.

The work focuses on three primary focuses: the profile and socio-professional framing of surgeries in Portuguese America; the medical-surgical practice in the 18^th century in Portugal and Latin America; and finally, the circulation of knowledge in this area between these two regions.

Monique Palma has a PhD in History from the University of Porto, Portugal. A Master’s in History from the University of Maringá, Brazil. She is a member of the Transdisciplinary “Culture, Space and Memory” Research Centre of the University of Porto. She works as a researcher in the project DUNES ~ o Mar, a Areia e as Gentes, of the History Centre of the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon. She received the International Doctoral Research Award “Pina Manique – From Enlightenment to the Liberal Revolution”, from the Portuguese Academy of History / Pina Manique Foundation, 2020.

This thesis is a canon, catalogue or dictionary of chroniclers of the Indies. It is an indispensable work for the history of Spanish and Spanish American thought as well as for the development of historical science as such. Thus, a biographic dictionary of Chroniclers of the Indies is published. The underlying thread of this work goes through the historiography of the Discovery. This review has a multidisciplinary character, especially useful for the construction of a philosophy of American history.

The Dictionary is divided into two sections: the first deals with the chroniclers of the period, from 1492 to ca. 1550 and the second with chroniclers from 1550 to 1700. The long list of chroniclers is already proof of how important it is as a source of study for the development of current Spanish and Spanish American thought.

The Hispanic cultural imprint in Latin America after the arrival of Europeans to the continent in 1492 and its control has important and endless consequences. In the case of Cuba, one of the last Spanish colonies in the Western hemisphere, this direct bond –as is well known- lasted until the later part of the 19^th century and was then reactivated in diverse ways during the first half of the past century along with the successive waves of migration of Spaniards to the Caribbean which continued to enrich the cultural wealth of the islands. It is pertinent to note that the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, founded in 1913, is Cuba’s most important museum institution. The importance and variety of its collections and the number of works gathered –approximately forty seven thousand and seven hundred pieces- including paintings, engravings, sculptures, drawings, ceramics, etc.-, make it the leading museum in the insular Caribbean and one of the most important ones in Latin America.
